General Motors’ decision to phase out its Pontiac line and reduced sales due to the recession cost Jackson County an automobile dealership Friday. Cole Buick-Pontiac-GMC, located astride the Banks-Jackson line on Stephen B. Tanger Boulevard at Banks Crossing, closed its doors Friday. The company had 11 employees. [Full Story »] 

Jefferson Caterpillar plant to shut down

The Jefferson Caterpillar plant will be closed in June due to the economic downturn. Officials announced Tuesday morning that the facility, which makes fuel systems, will begin laying off some 89 employees starting in May. The local facility’s work will be moved to plants in Thomasville, GA and Pontiac, IL.

Jan. unemployment at 9.5% for county

Jackson County’s unemployment rate shot up in January to 9.5%, up from 8.1% in December. The rate is significantly up from one year ago when it stood at 5.2% in January 2008. [Full Story »]
