Portion of Pendergrass Flea Market destroyed by fire

An early morning fire destroyed a portion of the Pendergrass Flea Market on Sunday, according to firefighters.

One of eight wings at the 250,000 square-foot indoor flea market collapsed during the blaze, which required a response from four fire departments in Jackson County.

“Once we got on the scene, there were flames coming out of the roof,” said Darrell Chaisson, assistant chief of the Jefferson Fire Department.

The Pendergrass Flea Market is located on U.S. 129 in the Jefferson city limits and bills itself as the largest flea market in Georgia. It includes more than 2.5 miles of storefronts with more than 500 booths and is open on the weekends, according to its website.

Burn victim taken to Grady

A 10-year-old child was airlifted to the Grady Medical Center burn unit in Atlanta Thursday after being burnt by some type of flammable liquid.

Plainview Fire/Rescue and Jackson County EMS were called to 415 Ridgewood Drive, Pendergrass, on a reported child burnt. They found a 10-year-old child with burns to approximately 30 percent of his body.

The victim was stabilized on the scene and transported by air helicopter to Atlanta.

The incident is under investigation by the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office and the Plainview Fire Department.

Fire ruled cooking-related

Two people were reportedly killed Saturday morning in a fire at a two-story home on Johnson Mill Road that is believed to have been cooking-related. The state fire marshal's office has ruled the fire as accidental.

Mary Nicole Cassell, 33, and Winter Wright, 9, died in the fire. Five other people, whose names have not been released, were reportedly injured in the fire which started around 3 a.m. The home was totally destroyed in the blaze.

County business damaged in fire

The H.W. Wilson Company in the Dry Pond community of Jackson County was heavily damaged in a fire Saturday night. No one was injured in the fire at the chemical plant and further details have not been released yet.

Two home fires reported

Two residential fires were reported in Jackson County on Wednesday, Nov. 25. The residents were at home in both fires but everyone inside escaped without injuries.
