Two council races set in Jefferson

Two Jefferson council members will be facing challengers in the Nov. 8 town election.

When qualifying ended Friday afternoon, incumbent Steve Kinney and Robert Yates qualified for the District 1 council seat. In District 5, incumbent Roy Plott and David Parks qualified.

In the District 3 council race, Steve Quinn was the only candidate to qualify. Incumbent C.D. Kidd is not seeking re-election.

In the three school board seats up for re-election, the incumbents were the only ones to qualify. They are: Angela McKinney, District 1; Willie Hughey, District 3; and Guy Dean Benson, District 5.

Portion of Pendergrass Flea Market destroyed by fire

An early morning fire destroyed a portion of the Pendergrass Flea Market on Sunday, according to firefighters.

One of eight wings at the 250,000 square-foot indoor flea market collapsed during the blaze, which required a response from four fire departments in Jackson County.

“Once we got on the scene, there were flames coming out of the roof,” said Darrell Chaisson, assistant chief of the Jefferson Fire Department.

The Pendergrass Flea Market is located on U.S. 129 in the Jefferson city limits and bills itself as the largest flea market in Georgia. It includes more than 2.5 miles of storefronts with more than 500 booths and is open on the weekends, according to its website.

Governor speaks at Systemax grand opening [video]

Governor Sonny Perdue joined with Systemax Inc. and local officials in Jackson County Monday afternoon to celebrate the grand opening of the company’s facility. Systemax, a Fortune 1000 company and one of the nation’s leading electronics retailers, opened a distribution center, TigerDirect retail store and business sales office in Jefferson. The company is investing $15 million in the facility and expecting to hire approximately 400 full-time local-area employees over the course of the coming five years. [Full Story »]

Jefferson Freedom Festival ahead Sat. in downtown

Fireworks, music, kids’ activities and food vendors will highlight the Freedom Festival slated for 5 to 10 p.m. Saturday, June 27, in downtown Jefferson. The fireworks show will begin around 9:30 p.m.

“Kiddieville,” sponsored by Jackson EMC and the Jefferson Area Business Association, will include inflatables and “much, much more,” said Main Street Jefferson director Beth Laughinghouse. “This is probably going to be our biggest festival to date.”

Mark Garrison and family will perform from 5 to 7 p.m. BlueBilly Grit, a Jackson County-based bluegrass band, is also on the music list for the evening. The Shade, including Jefferson resident Mark Starnes, along with three friends, will be on the lineup with classic rock and roll.
Food vendors will offer barbecue, hotdogs, hamburgers, bratwurst, ice cream, cotton candy, fried pickles, watermelon, boiled peanuts and more.

“The fireworks promise to be the best ones ever,” Laughinghouse said. “Bring your chairs and your family and friends and join us downtown for all the fun.”
