Arcade to place Sunday alcohol sales on March ballot

Arcade residents will decide in 2012 whether or not to permit Sunday alcohol sales in their town.

Arcade city council members voted unanimously Monday to put the issue on a March referendum. The referendum question would be three-pronged: Should sales be permitted on Sundays? Should Sunday sales be permitted in package stores? Should Sunday sales be permitted in retail establishments by-the-drink?

Recently-passed Senate Bill 10 allows local jurisdictions to place the Sunday sales issue on a referendum. Mayor Doug Haynie said the process would cost several thousand dollars but felt this weighty of an issue should be settled by voters. [Full Story »] 

Dentist files lawsuit against Arcade

A retired dentist has filed a federal civil rights lawsuit alleging that the City of Arcade has developed a speed trap targeting drivers with false charges.

Incumbent mayors win in town elections

The incumbent mayors were re-elected Tuesday in town elections in Jefferson, Nicholson and Arcade.

In Jefferson, incumbent Jim Joiner had 538 votes, while challenger Debbie Langley had 486 votes.

In the District 4 Jefferson City Council race, incumbent Bosie Griffith had 137 votes and challenger Brian Mitsdarffer had 133 votes.

In Arcade, incumbent Doug Haynie won 77-32 over Polly Davis.

In Nicholson, incumbent mayor Ronnie Maxwell won with 165 votes while challenger Jimmy Ford had 152 votes.

As for the four council seats up for grabs in Nicholson, the top four vote-getters who were elected to serve were: incumbent Lamar Watkins with 196 votes, Chuck Wheeler with 180 votes, incumbent Howard Wilbanks with 169 votes and Bobby Crawford with 155 votes.

Others on the ballot in Nicholson were: Faye Seagraves, 151 votes; Paul Cartlege, 151 votes; and Edmond Dempsey, 144 votes.

Arcade pulls out of Quad Cities Planning Commission

The Arcade City Council has voted to pull out of the Quad Cities Planning Commission. The council voted unanimously Monday night to withdraw from the partnership with Jefferson and Talmo. Pendergrass, one of the original four members of the group which shared zoning and building code officials, pulled out earlier. [Full Story »]

Three injured in Monday a.m. crash with firetruck

Three people were injured Monday morning when their car crashed into the back of a firetruck.

The incident happened about 8 a.m. on the Damon Gause Bypass at the Hwy. 82 intersection in Arcade. A fire truck was responding to a call at the time of the incident.

Three people in the car were transported to area hospitals.
