Storms cause damage in Jackson

Heavy thunderstorms caused much of the power in Jefferson to go out Thursday night along with problems in the Commerce area.

Some 25 trees were reported down in Jackson County along with a fire call in Maysville.

Wind also blew part of the roof off the old train depot in Jefferson.

JPD officers face racial shouting

Two Jefferson Police Department officers were shouted at and told to leave an area of the city because they were white.

A JPD officer was on bicycle patrol on Gordon Street when he stopped and approached several people sitting near some apartments. The officer was in the area because another JPD officer had reported suspicious activity on the property when 16 cars pulled in the area and someone came from a residence to the cars in what appeared to be a drug transaction activity.

The officer said he was at first greeted with silence, but then one black male told him to leave because he was a white cop and wasn’t welcome in the neighborhood.

The officer said the man cursed at him and continued to cause a disturbance, saying at one point, “Do not cll me by my name because I do not like police especially white ones.”

The man was detained by the officers briefly until he calmed down.

A second officer came to the scene and was told by others in the area to leave because white officers weren’t welcome.

The officers also spoke with the owner of the property, who said the JPD officers were welcome any time to come to the property.

Some power outages reported; Jackson EMC crews assist other counties

Jackson EMC cleared the last of the outages related to last night’s storms by 6:30 a.m. Thursday. Minor damage was sustained with 18 outages that affected 447 customers. The largest of those occurred at 12:25 a.m. in Gwinnett County in the area of Beaver Ruin and Steve Reynolds Boulevard, impacting 390 customers. Power was restored shortly before 2 a.m.

While Jackson EMC’s service area escaped major damage, others were not so fortunate. This morning the cooperative dispatched four crews, totaling 26 men and 16 vehicles, to assist two other North Georgia electric cooperatives which sustained significant damage. Two crews were sent to aid Amicalola EMC, headquartered in Jasper, and two to Habersham EMC, headquartered in Clarkesville.


Copper tubing theft reported at church

THIEVES STOLE 25 yards of copper tubing from Gum Springs Church last week.

The copper tubing was taken from the 250-gallon propane tank along the back wall into the heater under the church.

In a related incident, someone attempted to steal copper wire from a Plainview Road, Maysville, residence. The homeowner said when he arrived at the residence he saw a man run through the back yard.

Inside the home, he found broken windows, a damaged ceiling fan and copper wire piled in the floor that had been pulled from the wall.

Among the incidents reported to the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office last week included the following:

•a Jefferson man said he was delivering pizza in the Traditions of Braselton and a black SUV sideswiped his vehicle and didn’t stop.

•a Rabbit Run, Nicholson woman, said her husband was walking their dog when an animal attacked it and killed it. She said her husband is blind and didn’t know what animal killed the dog.

•a deputy was called to assist with an accident on Hwy. 129 at Sosebee Road. When the wrecked vehicle was being loaded onto the tow truck, it rolled back and hit the deputy’s patrol car.
