Jefferson woman shoots dog that threatens pet rabbit and chickens

A CARRUTH Road, Jefferson, woman said a small brown and white dog came into her yard and tried to kill her pet rabbit and chickens. The woman told a deputy with the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office that she had to shoot the dog to stop it from killing her animals. She said she doesn’t know who the dog belongs to.

Entering auto incidents keep Jefferson PD busy

The Jefferson Police Department responded to eight incidents on Wednesday, Oct. 26, where automobiles were entered during the previous night, including the following:

•253 Laurel Oaks Lane, an unlocked 1999 Ford Explorer was entered and a book bag and camera bag were taken. The complainant reported both front seat windows were left partially down. The complainant reported she located both bags on the right side of her house, but a Canon Rebel EOS camera was missing.

•363 Laurel Oaks Lane, a 2006 Toyota Corolla and a truck were both entered and a purse was taken from the Corolla. The complainant stated both vehicles were left unlocked. The responding officer reported the purse was found at the side of the residence with all of the contents thrown on the ground. The complainant stated an insignificant amount of loose change was missing. [Full Story »] 

East Jackson assistant coach killed in automobile accident

East Jackson assistant football coach Joel Conway, 34, was killed in an auto wreck on Ga. Hwy. 124 in West Jackson early Monday morning, according to the Georgia State Patrol. [Full Story »] 

Woman leaves car on I-85 after it breaks down and returns to find it stolen

A woman said her car was said someone stole her Mercedes Benz after she parked it along I-85 because it broke down.

The woman had called several wrecker companies, but none of them reported towing the vehicle during the 36-hour period that the vehicle was on the side of the roadway, according to the incident report filed at the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office.

BOC approves drug/mental health court

The Jackson County Board of Commissioners agreed Monday night to establish a drug court and mental health court.

Superior Court Judge Currie Mingledorff presented the request at a work session last week and said the courts would serve as “accountability courts.”

The county received a $25,000 grant to help get this program established. The total budget is $70,000.

The drug court will offer drug treatment, group therapy and random drug screenings. The offenders will also meet every two weeks with court officials, have a curfew and pay $150 a month fee for court costs.
