Elrod: County taxes to rise over two years

Tax Commissioner Don Elrod says homeowners with homestead exemptions should brace themselves for additional property taxes this year and the next.

The state homestead tax relief grant that funded an increased homestead exemption for homeowners for the last several years will not be available this year. Declining state revenues during the current recession means there is no money for the state to give the tax relief to homeowners with homestead exemption, said Elrod. [Full Story »] 

Reassessment notices coming

Some Jackson County property owners will be getting reassessment notices in the mail within the next week.

Chief tax appraiser Cathy Johnson said Tuesday that some 9,000 notices will be sent out in the coming days. Johnson said she has no way of determining how many of these are down in value and how many are up. [Full Story »] 

ACS Relay for Life set for this weekend

BOC tables BJC bailout vote

BJC Medical Center’s request for a financial bailout from the Jackson County Board of Commissioners was tabled Monday night. The BOC postponed taking action at its meeting and didn’t give a date as to when the matter might again be on the agenda. [Full Story »]

Cole Buick-Pontiac-GMC closes doors Fri.

General Motors’ decision to phase out its Pontiac line and reduced sales due to the recession cost Jackson County an automobile dealership Friday. Cole Buick-Pontiac-GMC, located astride the Banks-Jackson line on Stephen B. Tanger Boulevard at Banks Crossing, closed its doors Friday. The company had 11 employees. [Full Story »] 

BJC bailout request to be on agenda Mon.

BJC Medical Center’s request for financial assistance from the Jackson County Board of Commissioners will be on the agenda for possible action at next week’s BOC meeting. The meeting will be held at 6 p.m. on Monday at the courthouse.

At a BOC meeting two weeks ago, Rick Massey, a member of BJC Medical Center Authority, asked the county to guarantee — and repay — 75 percent of a $5.2 million loan, as well as guarantee 75 percent of a $1 million line of credit. [Full Story »] 

Fi fa notices being published this week

Some 188 pieces of property in Jackson County are being issued fi fa notices this week to collect back taxes, or the property will be sold by the county on June 2. [Full Story »] 

'66 addition torn off old courthouse

The 1966 addition to the Jackson County Historic Courthouse was torn down Monday afternoon as work began on restoring the building.

The addition had been built for office space, but it never fit the character of the courthouse.

Sales taxes down 36% in February

Jackson County sales tax revenues dropped by over a third in February from the year before. For the month, the county netted only $305,400 in local option sales taxes, down 36 percent — $169,600 — from February 2008. [Full Story »]
