Students who want to attend Jefferson High School, but who don’t live inside the city limits of Jefferson will have to begin paying tuition next year.
The Jefferson Board of Education approved the tuition last Thursday.
Current JHS students who live out-of-district will be “grandfathered” and won’t have to pay tuition. Students who have a parent working in the Jefferson system will also be exempted. Parents of students who live out-of-district, but who own property in the city, will receive a tax credit.
For the full story, see the April 16 issue of The Jackson Herald.
The City of Jefferson and the Jefferson City School district are two separate entities ;)
Better the out-of-townies pay than raise property taxes!

This is something that should have been in place years ago. I commend the board for approving this finally. Why should city taxpayers pay for kids who their parents choose for them to go to school at Jefferson instead of a county school? We shouldn't! This is a step in the right direction for Jefferson.
This policy is reasonable because it protects the right of local citizens.

I agree with the folks living in the city, however, we live out of the city district and my whole family graduated from Jefferson. Being a dragon all my live I think the JCS should have at least given a little consideration to those kids that belong to Alumni. I am quite sure that those kids are very few in numbers....I will keep paying as I agree that it is the right thing to do. I pay Jackson Cty School taxes & Jefferson tuition and more monies to have my kids play at the Jefferson Park & Rec.
It is sad that since family land is out of the city that Jefferson Alumni must be punished too.

I think it wonderful. We pay school taxes if you live outside the city you should pay the same. Thats the reason we moved into the limits for the schools. So if you want the advantage of the school pay. If not go to county they got two from which to choose.....
