The Jefferson Lady Dragons will move on to state volleyball competition as the number four seed after a strong showing in the area tournament over the weekend in Jefferson.
It’s the second trip to the state playoffs in only the team’s third year of existence.
The state playoffs will be held on Oct. 23 at Holy Innocents and Wesleyan on Oct. 23 and 25.
Jefferson started off strong on Thursday, defeating Lakeview Academy 2-1. They moved on to face Athens Academy, who was coming off of a win over Greene County. Athens used the momentum to defeat the Dragons 0-2. Lakeview, meanwhile, eliminated Greene County, from the competition.
Jefferson returned to their winning ways Thursday evening by eliminating Tallulah Falls, which qualified them for the state playoffs. Meanwhile, Lakeview eliminated Prince Avenue, qualifying them for the state playoffs, along with Athens Academy and North Oconee.
Tournament play continued on Saturday, with Jefferson falling to Lakeview 1-2. Jefferson won the first set, but Lakeview won the second two to take the match.
Meanwhile, North Oconee defeated Athens Academy to move on to the Area Championship match. Athens Academy came back to beat Lakewood to advance to the championship match, and would defeat North Oconee to become the number one seed.
Also during the day, Jefferson’s Stephanie Fincher was selected to the first team of the all area team.
