The wife of a local state senator asked the Jackson County Board of Education Monday night to support a Bible class being added the system’s curriculum.
Suzanne Hudgens, wife of state Sen. Ralph Hudgens, continued her campaign to have schools begin a history and literature class about the Bible. The class is allowed under a recent law adopted by the state legislature. She had earlier approached the Jefferson City School System with the same request.
No action was taken on her request Monday night.
Hudgens proposed that the elective class would utilize a student’s personal Bible and would not require any other text except the teaching manual.
According to Hudgens, the total cost of materials for the class would be under $200. Besides the low cost of the text materials, Hudgens also said that the class could be taught by anyone, not just a Bible scholar since the teaching manual and book provide all the information for the class.
I hope that we would also study the sacred texts of other religions in the same class, so that we have a full complement of the texts that have informed civilization, history and literature throughout the world. I don't think the class should be limited just to studying the Bible. That would omit a lot from our understanding of the bigger world.
There is a reason for the separation of church and state
people! It's bad enough that we have filled our schools with
a bunch of liberals to cloud our childrens minds with a bunch
of idealistic crap. No we are going to assume that anyone is
qualified to talk about religion. And how do you test or grade
anything. It is all opinion and open for interpretation.
Some people should find better things to do with their lives, maybe
get out in the real world and do some good for other people.
ITS ABOUT TIME WE ALLOW OUR SCHOOLS TO TEACH THE BIBLE! IF ALL SCHOOLS IN THIS COUNTRY WOULD DO IT THEN MAYBE THERE WOULDN'T BE SCHOOL SHOOTINGS AND SUCH... MORALS ARE A GREAT START TO A GREAT GENERATION
Kevin, you make a good point on morals; however, parents need to be teaching morals at home, not in the school. As far as whatajoke’s statement, I agree and add that if you teach the bible, you must teach the bible or equivalent of every different religion (see-attached link http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_religions) and that will never happen due to the ACLU.
In my college, we had to take a class on western religions that was taught by a catholic priest where had an overview of the different western religions not their personal view. That might be more appropriate.
In closing, teachers need to be spending more time teach math, reading, history, and writing not religion that is the job of the church. If you want bible study, pick a church that you agree with and attend.
I leave you to your own recourse. It's obvious the people of this county lack culture, refinement and good judgement. What do you go to church for? Why not use the schools to teach about the REAL HISTORY of religion and leave Bible study to the preachers. If the church leaders are failing to teach Bible class at church (instead of spending their time talking politics and begging for money), then they should be fired for not doing their jobs. However, a course on the Bible as History would be VERY INTERESTING! For example, how Pope John Paul I helped Hitler rise to power, and how the crusades were a ruse for the Pope's need for wealth and power. How Christmas was actually adopted on the 25th of Dec. to entice the barbarians into "coming on board" with the Christian religion (what else do you celebrate on Dec. 25th other than Christ's b'day which was really in October - Santa, a disguised ancient diety!), and how Easter was really a fertility rite (hence eggs and bunnies)! But no, we don't want our children knowing what we have spent years sweeping under the carpet. Teach your kids lies. I'm done with your poor judgement, single-minded ignorance, and lack of curiosity for knowledge and truth!
i don't teach my kids the wrong stuff for example christmas at my house = no santa why the hell would i want to give some unknown fat guy credit for what me and my wife did ? we don't. christmas at my home is about the birth of christ not santa
She only did it because Ralph is running. Ralph just got caught in a bunch of lies dealing with endorsements and has had to retract statements from the ABH and other papers. He has got to go! I voted democratic for the first time ever. I voted for Riley!
