Several teens that were arrested for underage drinking were among those arraigned in Jackson County State Court last week on charges stemming from an Aug. 9 incident where sheriff’s deputies busted a party off Waterworks Road in Commerce. Not all of the teens who were charged appeared at the arraignment.
One defendant, who entered a plea of guilty told the judge she thought 80 hours of community service would be too difficult for her to do with her school and work schedule. She mentioned that her mug shot was posted on The Jackson Herald, Bad and Busted and another news site. “I’ve just had a really hard time with this,” she said. “I just believe that this has got a lot of publicity.”
But visiting Judge Michael E. Hancock wasn't very sympathetic.
“You put you in this spot," he said. "When you have choices and you make the decision to do what you did to put you in this spot, there are consequences. The process when you break the law (is) not supposed to be a cakewalk. The intention is to cause some pain in order to get your attention. It is a spanking. It is to cause some discomfort to try to get you to make better decisions. And so, 80 hours ain’t a whole lot.”
Those arraigned on charges of underage possession of alcohol who entered guilty or nolo pleas were Melanie Marie Breedlove, Hannah Olivia Smith, Jeremy Deshard Varnum and Joseph Tyler Black. They were all sentenced to six months probation, between 60-80 hours of community service with one-half of it being served with the Jackson County Road Department, a three-page essay double space, attend Drunk Buster class and pay a $300 fine.
Those who entered a plea of not-guilty (pre-trial program) to report back on Dec. 18 are Olivia Blake Brasher, Courtney Lynn Hubbard, Olivia Paige Jones, Kendall Elizabeth Jonesof, Kyle Fraser Wright Kashuba, Kacy Breanna Morgan, Sidney Marie Shipman, Rikki Hannah Smith, Cody Michael Streetman and Samantha Jo Sutherland.
And those who entered a plea of not-guilty (pre-trial program) and will report back on Jan. 9 are Jonathan William Alexander, Samantha Lee Crawford, Austin William Pankevich and Hannah Elizabeth Seagriff.
