A Jefferson girl is recovering after undergoing a heart transplant Saturday night.
Katie Testement, daughter of Kerri and James Testement, was placed on the heart transplant list on July 3. Family members were told the average wait for a heart was four months and that it could be as long as one year. But Saturday night, the family received the phone call and headed to Egleston Hospital in Atlanta.
Family and friends gathered at the hospital as preparations were made to get Katie, age 6, into surgery. She wore a dress with hearts on it and carried her doll with her to the hospital. She played with her brother, Ryan, age 2, while waiting for the surgery to get under way. Child care professionals then spoke with her about the surgery and what was ahead.
The surgery started late Saturday night and lasted until Sunday morning. On Sunday, another emergency surgery was performed when a clot was found near her heart.
