Four JCCHS student athletes suspended

Jackson County Comprehensive High School has suspended four players from all football team activities for two games.

The four players were suspended after head football coach Billy Kirk had reason to believe that they were involved in drug use over the weekend. According to the school, no students were caught with drugs or drug paraphernalia on campus or off.

Following a conference with each individual student, the administration contacted the parents or guardians of each of the players and suspended each player for a period covering two games.


Jackson County school Superintendent Shannon Adams said that it appeared that the coaching staff and high school administration followed the correct procedure and the matter was handled appropriately.

Adams said, “I would be more than happy to speak to or meet with the person(s) who provided the original account [to the newspaper.]”

According to an email from Adams, “The Jackson County School System Code of Conduct deals with the topic of disciplining students for off-campus misconduct, stating in part that a student who has violated the drug laws and whose presence at school is reasonably certain to endanger other students or staff or cause a substantial disruption to the educational climate may be disciplined or excluded from school.”

“The standard practice at JCCHS for handling off-campus drug use,” said Adams, “assuming that there are no aggravating circumstances as listed above, is to notify the parents and inform them of the facts.”
