The Jackson County School System will proceed with plans to consolidate school facilities on the East side of the county. Interim superintendent April Howard made that announcement Wednesday night at a brief meeting of the Jackson County Board of Education in response to community questions about those plans following the sudden departure of John Green as superintendent.
Howard said that the system would move forward with the plans, which include the temporary closure of South Jackson Elementary School, the combining of Kings Bridge Middle School with East Jackson Middle School and the moving of 8th Graders into a wing of East Jackson Comprehensive High School.
Howard also said the system would redoing its calendar for next year which will include a significant increase in furlough days over previous proposals.
BOE chairman Lynn Wheeler said proceeding with the consolidation plans is “in the best interest of the school system.”
The consolidation plans were controversial, but the JCSS is facing a major financial crisis and is looking for ways to cut expenses.
