A motor vehicle wreck Friday morning on Interstate 85 sent multiple persons to area hospitals and blocked the northbound lanes of Interstate 85 for several hours. The incident occurred shortly before 6 a.m. in the vicinity of mile marker 133 (between the Jefferson and Braselton exits); as of 9 a.m., traffic was still backed up for miles on the northbound side. Members of the band Party on the Moon were en route to Winston-Salem, NC, for a performance in Winston-Salem’s Downtown Winter Bash when the driver suffered a “medical emergency” and slumped over the steering wheel, according to a Web site for the Bash.
The motor home left the roadway onto the median, struck the cable barrier, crossed back over the northbound lanes and overturned on the side of the road. The North Carolina Web site indicated that there were no life-threatening injuries. Jackson County Sheriff Janis Mangum reported that 911 officials told her 16 people were transported, although not all of those were injured. The Georgia State Patrol reported 12 injuries.
Party on the Moon is “a national party band,” according to its Web site.
