The Jackson County Board of Education approved a school calendar for the 2013-2014 school year at its meeting Monday night.
Students will begin classes on Aug. 8 with teachers starting on Aug. 1 for preplanning.
The last day of classes will be May 23, 2014.
Students will have vacation days on Sept. 2; Oct. 11 and 14; Nov. 27-29; Dec. 23-Jan 3; Jan. 20; Feb. 14 and 17; March 14 (teacher planning day) and 17; and April 7-11.
If budget constraints cause the system to have to cut days, Nov. 25 and 26 are slated for that. The system won’t set its new budget until later this spring.
I just hope they don't teach economics. That should be reserved for an organization with a balanced budget.
And no, I am not a teacher.
If they got a longer vacation there, where do you suggest they add the days? Start even earlier, go past Memorial Day? You have to pick the times.
This is practically the same calendar that we had for 2012-2013. I don't understand what the complaints are.
Teachers don't know how easy they got it!!!
I have been teaching 17 years, and I have both a Bachelor's and a Master's degree, and I do not yet make $55K a year. Our salary is stretched throughout the entire 12 months. I work long hours and I pour my heart and soul into my career, and I truly care for my students. True, I do get several weeks off a year, and I am lucky for that. My parents worked VERY hard to put me through college, and I put myself through graduate school (which took several years to pay off) Please DO NOT assume that you know me, my salary, or how much time I put into my job.
According to my calculations, a teacher earns around 75 cents every minute. I could be wrong, I was educated in the Jackson County School System.
If you think teachers have it made, why don't YOU become a teacher?
I can assure you that I work with children from ages 4-18 6 days a week....for FREE! I work my tail off providing for my family doing my normal job during the day and volunteer my time to children & teenagers. I have never asked to be paid for my work with children.
I wouldn't try to explain anything about any job, to anyone in this county for any reason. Many native Jackson Countians don't appreciate education or educators. It's sad. Teachers, don't read this mess posted about things people don't care or know about. You will be better served.
Many teachers and lunchroom staff help the kids out of their own pockets - with food, on field trips, and in buying supplies.
It's not required, they do it out of kindness & caring.
And, they don't broadcast it.
