Planning board nixes Jefferson apartments

Plans to locate a large apartment complex in Jefferson hit a road block last week when the Jefferson-Talmo Planning Commission recommended denial of a rezoning request for the project.
The planners unanimously recommended denial of the request from John and Jan Buchanan to rezone 23.5 acres on the Damon Gause Bypass from R-2 MFR for an apartment complex, as well as rezoning 1.5 acres from R-2 to C-2 for proposed commercial use. The planners also recommended denial of two variance requests for the project.
The Jefferson City Council will consider the requests when it meets at 6 p.m. on Monday, Jan. 14, at the civic center. The request swill be on the city council agenda for a vote at the Monday, Jan. 28 meeting, to be held at 6 p.m. at the civic center.

If I were a resident of Jefferson, I would do everything in my power to keep apartment complexes out.

This is unfortunate. It would be nice to have decent apartments to live in for those of us who either can't afford, don't need, or simply don't want all the hassle and additonal fees of a house. There are no "decent" options for apartments in the Jefferson area. So, I moved myself and my business to Gainesville where I live in a very nice apartment complex. Would love to move back to the Jefferson area but just not interesed in trying to buy a house. So, you might not want the apartments but it would benefit more families then you may think.

As a Gwinnett/Dekalb county apartment native (never lived in a house until I was an adult), I have seen first hand how "nice" apartment complexes go bad. Management companies, after a while, get lazy, complacent, and just don't keep the complex up to the standards in which they originally intended. That's what all these developers think..."I'll build a nice apartment complex". Yea, and then crime rate goes up, trash and rubbish are constant eyesores, cars/boats parked all over the place. I'm telling you, Jefferson, keep it out! But, I don't live in Jefferson...so, good luck with this!

I am against apartment homes in Jefferson. I am a resident here and I think we need to take care of the residents the homes that are trashing up the town. We have so many homes becoming rentals, and the rental companies are not keeping them up. Call code and they get worse? I am happy that something was denied for the good of the City!

guess they did not know who to slip the money under the table to. not to worry the council will approve it just like they will the new Wal-mart
