The Jackson County School System isn’t in the process of a layoff — but the district is reorganizing employees in what superintendent John Green calls an “absorption plan.”
Since Green became superintendent of the school system in July, he has been focused on making the district more financially sustainable — in hopes of eliminating employee furlough days. For the latest personnel cutbacks, the Jackson County School System is using an “absorption plan” that Green says follows when employees decide to leave the district. He estimated that 40 positions have been trimmed from the district’s payroll since he became superintendent.
While school system officials don’t know yet exactly how much money has been saved with the absorption plan, Green said it is significant.

While the BOE grows the schools are losing key support in the classrooms.
They should 'absorb' some of the fat of the Board Office back into the schools and then he could cut back all of the furlough days.
This seems so simple if government empire building isn't the goal.
By the way there are many educators in the private education world who make less and are quite happy.
Also, on another note, if they are happy with what they make, great for them. People get advanced degrees for various reasons, but more money to provide for your family is generally in that equation somewhere. If someone is not happy with the money they make they try to improve their situation if able. You start cutting teacher salaries 20% and they might look elsewhere. Cut other employees salaries 20% then they can't afford to get to work. If people would step back for a minute and think about what the jobs and what they really and truly entail, they would realize that what these people get paid is reasonable if not under paid. I understand that the school system is not a company, but when there is that much money involved it functions like one. If anyone who thinks they are over paid, what do you think you should make if you did that job? I am sure we all think we deserve and have earned more money than what we make, but it easy to look at someone we don’t know and point fingers and say you are paid too much.
You take a teacher with an Educational Specialist degree and 10 years experience. They make around $60,000 a year. Sounds like good money. I make that in the private sector with a bachelors and 6 years experience in Materials Management, Operations and Logistics. Add a master’s degree and one can make up to $90,000 in my profession. Take a teacher that is fresh out of school and they make around $34,000 a year. You can make that with a high school diploma working in manufacturing. I am sure that some one will get on here and say you don’t get paid that much in manufacturing, but I worked as a machine operator in Pendergrass, Athens, and Braselton. Each place I worked while I was getting my degree paid me $33,000 - $37,000 a year.
All I am saying is that they DO NOT get paid enough and cutting their salaries by 20% is not the answer. To think they do is just foolish.
Greens biggest money problems are the huge salaries at the board office such as nutrition director and other similar overpaid positions. How many teachers were furloughed to pay those salaries? How many para pros were lost?
Education begins at HOME, try starting there first!
Reason for Action: To hire more teachers and increase dues paid to teacher unions and PACs.
Action: Children need more days of instruction. Myth
Reason:
If teachers are working more days they need more money.
Action:
Students need to be fed at school by government employees. Myth
Reason: Increase the role of government in peoples lives so government take more money. Also a vote buying scheme.
This could go on for some time I hope the picture is painted.
It is not a myth that a smaller student to teacher ratio is more effective. That sir is fact even if you don’t want to believe it. I am sure there are other ways to teach as well, but it is no myth.
Unfortunately, the whole school providing lunch is because of all the dead beat parents that could care less if their child was fed or not. While I understand that there are some families that have hit extreme economic hard times, there are many parents that just don’t do their job and do what’s best for the child. You need to think about why the school feeds the kids. I mean really think about it. Don’t be so quick to make everything about government needs more money. (Yes the government is like that, but there are some programs out there that are not just to make more money for the government.) The schools feed the kids so that they can make sure that the kids are getting at least 1 good meal a day.
