It's election day! Results to be posted tonight

Tuesday, August 21. 2012

Voters will go to the polls today (Tuesday) to elect a sheriff and probate judge. The polls will be open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.
Results will be posted here tonight at they are counted.
Candidates in the runoff election are:
•Sheriff — Ramone Gilbert and Janis Mangum.
•Probate Judge — Sherry Moore and Donna Sikes.
•U.S. Representative, 9th District — Doug Collins and Martha Zoller.

I respect all candidates in the upcoming elections. I just wanted to share a few of my thoughts since this website seems to be the main database for Jackson Countians to share their political thoughts.

Sheriff
I see a MAJOR discrepancy with the sheriff race. With all do respect for Mangum, I have a hard time voting for someone without a high school diploma. That just scares me. How can we expect someone with that caliber education to lead our county sheriffs office. After all, the Sheriff is the MOST POWERFUL PERSON IN THIS COUNTY. Period. When something goes down, is that who we want leading us?

This is all opinion of course. And, no, I'm not a member of the Ramone Gilbert camp. Just a normal citizen who lives in this county and keeps up with what little knowledge comes my way. I would hope that this county and its voters would be able to see through some of the transparency I have. I am from a small town and its always been a "popularity contest" when it comes to these elections. At some point, we need to actually look at the candidate for what their goals are, what new ideas they bring to the table. What direction they want to take the county. Not for who they are, or who their perents were. If we were voting for prom king or prom queen it would be a different story. But this is a highly sought after, powerful position here. All I ask is that people really look at the candidates.

I couldn't agree more. What scares me the most is that some people will vote for Janis, simply because she worked for the previous Sheriff, despite her lack of qualifications. Fresh ideas and proactive thinking are what keeps an organization from becoming stale an complacent. When you compare these 2 resumes, there really isn't a comparison.

I think if you have worked somewhere have hands on experience an know this county, makes no difference if its high school college or ged you can do it.Does it scare you that your parents an grandparents didnt even have that and was more successful than these that finishes high school AND COLLEGE.

Bill Gates was successful because he had fresh and innovative ideas about new ways of doing business. He didn't copy someone else's business plan and take the "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" approach.

I was in a local eatery this morning and the talk was that Janis was made head over the jail at one time and then got taken from that duty because she couldnt handle it. If this is true do we want someone like that to be sheriff of Jackson county? And before you go saying I am a Gilbert supporter, one of the fellows at the table had a Janis Mangum for sheriff shirt on and all he said was he could neither confirm nor the deny the statement and left it at that.

well I am very skeptical that you have no dog in this show, however I think Mr Gilbert is the direction of Federal and extra state dollars that when taken result in over reach of the office of Sheriff, I would rather have someone not focused on GROWING revenue and expanding size and scope of the dept. getting more "free" (i say gifts with strings) often leads to violations of innocent peoples rights....

The crazy thing is that this is only coming up now, after Ms. Mangum was the top vote getter in the primary. I wasn't even going to vote in the runoff, but now I feel compelled.

Success in life is not from a book, it is from hard work. No doubt, a formal education can make your life easier and that is what we want to stress to our younger generation. Not having a formal education only means you will work twice as hard in life to accomplish the same thing as someone with a diploma or a degree. It does not make you any more or less a person or any more or less intelligent.

For someone to come as far as Janis has means she has overcome more trials by taking a lot harder road to get to where she is. This has made her who she is today. She has not only worked hard to compensate for a lack of any degrees but she has also overcome being a female in law enforcement which is man's world. This was two strikes against her in our society.

There are times when you need something that you can't get from a book. You get these things from compassion for others and life lessons. She has that something!

Yes, in my eyes she is a huge success. I hope that anyone who has not taken the traditional road will see her as a success and an inspiration. This is a free country we choose our path and remember, we are only limited by how hard we are willing to work. MANGUM FOR SHERIFF 2012

What we don't need is a Sheriff that will militarize the department and focus law enforcement on revenue generation like Braseleton and Jefferson. I'll take a constitutional approach to law enforcement over education that can be purchased virtually anywhere any day of the week.

Education does not equal "smarts" or "common sense" or "honorable" in some cases nor does it equal "compassion". Look all around the US and see what our "educated" leaders have done to bring us to where we are now in both economics and quality of life. The best person for the job may not always hold the most degrees! So lets cut the low blows from the Gilbert camp towards the opponent. I wonder if some of these negative comments are indeed from Gilbert himself. Promise anyone, anything to win but I just wonder how he can fill the same position he promised to several people??? Lot of that going around! By the way, what is Gilbert's high school & post school background? Sorry, did not mean to lower myself to bashing.

I'm sorry, but why are we looking at the only the education of a person for an election? I can walk through the Kroger in Jefferson and talk to twenty high school graduates that are dumb as a post and can't spell half the words used in this newspaper. Don't misunderstand me, education is very important. But that's not all that matters. Personally. I will be looking at ALL aspects of a person up for election before judging them. Some of you are extremely judgmental. But, alas, "every saint has a past and every sinner has a future".

I was looking at all the campaign signs for both Sheriffs candidates.
Gilbert's say "Paid for by the Committee to Elect"
Mangum's say "Paid for by the Candidate"
I didn't know that a Lt. made THAT much $. Where did all of the $ for the signs come from? Maybe all of the people who will use her as a puppet.

Excellent question-BUT as long as you're asking...why not ask "Why is all this money coming in from Hall county to try and elect Gilbert?"
There are too many unanswered questions about that man to elect him as sheriff. Period. He lives in a nice house, but just a couple of miles away he owns a slum-lord trailer park that he never tries to improve.
His supporters drive these big pickups with mobile billboards in the bed and then conviently park them on private property without permission until someone calls to tell them to move it. (Sounds really ethical and legal doesn't it?)
My favorite was the one driving the Superduty Ford with the billboard repeatedly across and in front of the crowd trying to watch and enjoy the Jefferson Freedom Festival Fireworks.
Folks, you get what you pay for. Hall county seems to be paying a LOT for Gilbert. What will it bring if he is elected?

Wow! Hard to believe the debate has decayed to this level.
So, one of the candidates made a mistake, and quit school, with all respect to mrs mangum, a long dang tme ago. Instead of stopping there and becoming a leach on society, she has worked in a career field, which by the way requires at least aG.E.D. to be certified in, Become extremely well respected, and now is aspiring to improve herself further by attempting to serve her county even more.

How dare she? Doesn't she know that she made a mistake thirty years ago, and should be doomed, condemned, and shunned?

While Mr Gilbert may not be responsible for the actions of his supporters, I know I would disavow myself of anyone acting like this in my name.

I don't want this county to go the way of Hall County or Athens/Clarke County. I want a Sheriff who will treat me fairly without being overbearing. We already have to much intrusion into our personal lives that we are losing our liberties and freedoms. I will be voting for Janis Mangum for Sheriff because she is the best choice for Jackson County. We don't need Gilbert who in my opinion will bring Gestopo tactics to the Citizens of Jackson County.

I agree it is sad the way people are bashing Janis about her education! I would like to see someone with a COLLEGE DEGREE in "anything" work a child abuse case, child molestation case, burglary, or ANY type of criminal case with out the experience!!!
I am not going to bash anyone on this post so skip over it if thats what you wnat to read, but people REALLY...PLEASE!!!!! Quit trying to slam people for their education because even a GBI agent with a FOUR year degree has to be trained for the position!! A good sheriff will put the right people in the right postion to help him/her run the department the way it should be run! One person does not run the department alone, never has never will!

I do not make a habit of reading outrageous blogging but was at my computer and in great error decided to do so.
My first thought was how rediculous some comments are. To say ones education does not matter is ludicrous. Are we going top tell our children it does not matter? I pray not.
The statement of dropping out of school appears to be a fact. The comment on a (Gestopo???) is fictional. We need to all stick to facts.
We are not only hurting the candidates but their family. Gilbert has openly mentioned his three children in a forum and his push card shows their picture. His children are attending a local school. Mangum, although she has not mentioned her middle aged son, Chad Hoopaugh and his son (do not know his name and it does not matter) they all have been hurt by these comments as well as the two candidates.

Why do we as so called adults want to harm anyone.

I am beginning to think that Jackson Co. may be the RED NECK county that we are sometimes referred to.

Lets stick to FACTS!

For the past year and a half, I have had the priviledge to work on the Gilbert campaign. We have worked hard to educate the people of Jackson county of Ramone's qualifications. And yes, we have worked hard on fundraisers with the help of valuable Jackson County supporters. Many of you have met Ramone because he has worked hard for something he truly believes in. Ramone has been and continues to be the only candidate who is READY to work for the citizens of Jackson county. Please vote on Tuesday for the candidate with the experience and qualifications to keep the future of our children safe from drugs, gangs and criminals. I've come to realize throughout this campaign that there are people who will lie,slander and do dishonest things (using this newspaper) to promote the candidate of their choice. I am proud to display my name because I believe in something that I know is the TRUTH! I'm proud to say that I have been a part of an honest and positive campaign. Thank you to all of the supporters who have helped us throughout Ramone's journey. The future is now in the voter's hands.

An education does not make the person. Mr. Gilbert came to my home to personally campaign. I was immediately turned off when he asked me to vote for him in the sheriff's election for Hall County!! A four degree requirement? How about a requirement of just knowing where your voters are?

If education is all that important (and it isn't), why did the voters pass over the candidate with the most degrees, Andy Garrison, in the first round?

Sounds like we are more interested in common sense, experience and reasonable expectations than in a marginal difference in educational background.

Haven't you heard and seen the Hall County Problems? Wake up people, if you elect Ramone Gilbert you will have I-team investigations and GBI probes like them. Ask Jeff Strickland how he likes the I-team's Dale Russell. I know Ramome Gilbert speaks well, but if he did such a great job in Hall County, then why not stay? WAKE UP PEOPLE!!
Ramone Gilbert is not a FBI agent, he was sent to the FBI school to run the court house. He has never served one day with the agency.
How many indiscretions do you people need before we see the real truth? He was the jail Major when the captain kicked the inmates in the head. Again do you want to see the I-team here in Jackson County?
BOTTOM LINE, I WILL TAKE A HIGH SCHOOL DROP-OUT OVER CORRUPTION AND COVER UPS ANYDAY!

The man is running for sheriff. I have nothing negative to say about Mrs Mangum. Im sure she is a nice lady. Come on people lets all have a little more class.

Look if you want to find fault you can . This is America . We should have the right to vote and voice our opinions on the candiate of our choice. All this back and forth turns people off to the Bad comments being written. I have Known Janis all her life and I know what she stands for .I Do not know Ramone . But our country is in a period that we need people who will stand for the right. and I know she will . This may not be popular ,but education has nothing to do with Godly standards. God give us more people who will stand on their convictions and just let us vote for who our heart and God leads us to vote for without being persecuted . Are you forgetting the civil rights movement what people went thru then just to vote.Many had no education but they had the right to vote and became mighty leaders in our country. I would like to thank all of the Sheriff candidates for not bringing up the fact that Janis has a GED during the campaign. The fact that nobody did this tells me that all the candidates are GOOD people. If she wins I hope she gets some good help in managing a budget over 10 million.
