A controversial international investment firm has acquired a second large tract of rural land in Jackson County and is asking the county to change its land use plan to allow over 800 acres to be rezoned for industrial and commercial development. The undeveloped land is located along Hwy. 129 South across from South Jackson Elementary School between Crooked Creek Rd. and Mary Collier Rd. Several South Jackson resident are already organizing opposition to the proposed change in county land use to allow for industrial development in the area.
The Walton Group, which is pursuing a change in the land's zoning, has raised some eyebrows, however, over how it deals with local governments. Walton has defended its practices, but critics say the company is misleading local government officials with plans for projects it never really plans to carry out.
For the full story, see the July 11 issue of The Jackson Herald.

Representative government is failing us all the way down to the local level. This is ridiculous. The Comprehensive Plan and Future Land Use map are thoughtfully assembled by the citizens of this county and should not be so blatantly disregarded.
Pick up the phone and call your commissioner, talk to your neighbors, show up at the Planning Commission meeting. Over the next 20 years Jackson County will reap the benefits from the foresight of maintaining rural and agricultural land (and much of the vacant industrial buildings and land along the 85 corridor will probably still be underutilized).
And I feel like I should throw "carpetbaggers" or "yankee
And they are planning to put a negative position on this property...so anyone in the board who thinks its going to pass the NEGRC can just put this idea in the grave. Apparently this deal is so bad Mr. Short really needs to reconsider his idea's of exactly where he wants to put future business. Again I say the abandoned and already zoned areas is a good place to start.
Let's send them packing, Don't come around here no more. Tell 'em to go speculate in Calif, there are cities up for sale out there that would love to have their money.. As long as it ain't here! Keep us posted Mike..
Heard Home Depot nixed Jackson County.
Then heard ChickFilet was going go build a restaurant then see a POPEYE's near 85 (YUCK).
As a current run away from Gwinnett we had better get our arms around uncontrolled zoning before it turns up to be Gwinnett North.
This county should have a proposed land use map.

There is no walmart deal. Everytime someone starts grading in Jackson county a wal mart rumor starts... no walmart they have no interest here.
We need to send Walton group down the road period. If not for the greedy group on the Arcade city council they would be long gone.
Also a shout out for our friends at Salvadore's and Creme 'n' Sugar.
Thanks for reminding us all to visit our local businesses. Sorry to see Ali-V's close :(
Erratic zoning is NOT good. There must be a plan in place.
And to anyone who thinks this will remain a cow pasture it won't. You would not want a restaurant next to a fertilizer plant.
And by the way taxes are much higher here than in Gwinnett.
