Jefferson ends 2011 in the black

The City of Jefferson finished 2011 in the black, building its reserves to a little over $3.9 million. Jefferson had total revenues of $7.3 million last year in its General Fund, the majority of which came from property and sales taxes. Public safety was the largest single expense for the city at $2.3 million followed by culture and recreation at $1.8 million.
The city’s General Fund netted $327,500 in the year. The town’s water and sewer fund was also in the black in 2011.

Reserves??? As a teacher with Jefferson City Schools it infuriates me that we have faced more furloughs than most other systems for going on our fourth year now and yet our system was able to afford a NEW administration building AND still add to reserves. I know that some of you think that teachers are already over paid but that is not the discussion here...how would you feel if your employer decided to pay you less money this year and there was nothing that you could do about it? My bills have not gone down, and yet my pay has for FOUR years. I'm glad that our school system has found a way to end the year adding to their reserves, because I sure haven't been able to!

Respectfully, your information is incorrect. The BOE and City of Jefferson are two different entities with two different tax revenues (mils).

Hey confused teacher,
Try private industry for a while and you'll stop your whining. Consider yourself fortunate as you have great benefits, pension and excellent holiday breaks. My last company gave 1 day of for Christmas, you have 2 weeks!
I'd love to know what grade and subjects you teach, be thankful, when the economy recovers your furloughs will disappear. I suggest you vote for Romney to ensure our economy recovers.

She has it right in a sense all should be one part of a slush fund if you will. Nothing should ever be seperated as part the deal. If the BOE operates in the city it should be tied to the city funds no excuses allowed. How it ever got split I would like to know as well???? Making two funds for something to come out makes corruption that much easier to finance without oversight. In case you didn't know Georgia has an F in corruption and ethical in almost every level in each of its cities and towns. T BELL AND M BISON would be wise to pay homage to teachers as they are the sweat and blood of trying to teach with respect to what they are given. It's the admininstration that needs not just a haircut but a full shave!!!!!!!!!!!

Well, the city and the school system are two separate government entities. They are audited apart and have different functions. At one time, the city did have a closer relationship with the school system, but the laws changed and those funds are not co-mingled. And you don't want them be in the same pot. Just as the county school system isn't part of the county government, the city school systems aren't part of their city governments. Each has its own elected board or council. That's the way it's supposed to be. It's not unethical, it's the legal way to operate.

And let's get to the real point and recognize and congratulate Amie Vaughan, who manages the city finances and did a stellar job in the recent audit of city finances. Amie is a little known but valuable asset to our city. She deserves immense credit for the state of our finances. Kudos Amie!

Cry me a river confused teacher. Teachers are not the only ones getting furloughed yet they are the ones crying the most. I am a law enforcement officers wife and we too have furlough days- 1 per month- so to your 6 or 8 furloughs per year, we have 12. AND- I can assure you that we are living on far less than you as a teacher because the state saw fit to make a base salary for all teachers.
For you to not understand that the City of Jefferson and the City school system are two separate entities shows you complete ignorance. How bout you go back to your government class to learn how the government works- School and local government are not together.

what bothers me the most is that "culture and recreation" are the second largest expense. both of these areas should be self supporting through user fees. in these tough economic times, only the essentials should be funded by tax $$$

A top flight Rec dept like we have here in Jefferson is an essential service, it gets kids involved early learning about sportsmanship and brings families together. This thread is hosed, and going in wrong direction. The confused teacher was complaining about furlough days from the school budget management but confusing it with the city financial status.

what I am saying is that I should not be taxed so that someones rug rat can play ball and not have to pay for it! government can not be the omnipotent provider of all services. I would much rather have more police, a full-time fire department and water that is fit to drink. if you have a kid , then you should pay for it , not me !

This post is right on the money. I should not be taxed 15.3% to pay for the vote buying schemes of Social Security and Medicare, get old - better have saved your own money.

I should not have to pay Federal Income taxes to support those who can't afford or won't work to provide shelter or feed themselves or their children.

I should not have to pay property taxes to educate children, have children - have what can be paid for with your family's earnings.

I should not pay taxes for others healthcare, if your life is valuable pay for insurance.

You are delusional and aren't playing with a full deck. You want a full-time fire-dept? Well get ready to see another $8-$10 million minimum in tax increases to fund it. Our volunteer fire dept does an excellent job and they will always be a volunteer dept. Give up that dream. And if we close down the Rec dept funding we'll just send all those rug-rats to your neighborhood cause they will be looking for something to do.
The city is financially in black and we have one of best Rec depts in state. And results of success in our Rec dept programs are refelected by the excellence in Jefferson schools HS sports. Get a clue dude..

And one last question on your desire for 'al a carte' taxes, i.e. no kid = no rec taxes, if we did that you would probably complain to city that you only take one shower per week and use paper plates and therefore shouldn't be taxed for water. And I have to ask, are you saying or think there is water quality problem here with city water? Would love to hear it if you do.

city water tastes like it came from a swimming pool (too much chlorine)
essentials that taxes should pay for include public safety, infrastructure (water and sewer) , streets and education. everything else is gravy that can be cut during hard economic times. I grew up in Jefferson before rec departments and we did not roam the town creating mayhem and robbing little old ladies. museums, civic centers and rec departments are nice when the money is flowing fast and easy but
times have changed and government needs to also. if you can't afford to raise your kids then don't have any !!!!

Yes politicians seem to think there is no end to what people can pay for.

We have borrowed so much money from China that they may be here any time taking over. I'm sure they won't be concerned with our needs and especially not our wants.

Not sure that many people agree with you on water quality or on Rec department. It's easy to criticize from your lazy-boy. Why don't you get out and volunteeer some of our time and talent at the Rec dept mentoring young kids. Sounds like you may have alot to offer the kids from one parent families. And you will get first-hand view of the multiple benefits of our fantastic Rec dept and management thereof.
