The Jackson County Board of Education is expected to name its next superintendent this week — possibly just minutes before a graduation ceremony. Two weeks ago, the board named John Green and Dale Gaddis its finalists for superintendent of the Jackson County School System. Superintendent Shannon Adams is retiring because of health reasons.
Green is principal of a high school in Madison, Ala. that is under construction. He retired from Gwinnett County Public Schools in June 2011 as an area superintendent.
Gaddis is currently an area superintendent for the Cobb County School System. In recent years, he has been named a finalist for superintendent of the Cobb County and Cherokee County school systems, but didn’t land those jobs.
By state law, the board must wait 14 days after announcing its finalists for superintendent before naming the top pick.
On Thursday, the board met for about 35 minutes in a closed-door session to discuss personnel, but didn’t take any action when the meeting was opened to the public. Superintendent Adams waited in the hallway during that meeting.
When asked, board chairperson Lynn Wheeler-Massey said the BOE will likely hold a called meeting just before graduation at Jackson County Comprehensive High School on Thursday night. BOE members are slated to attend the graduation ceremonies at both JCCHS and East Jackson Comprehensive High School on Friday night. The last day of school for students in Friday.
In 2006, the board named Adams as its superintendent just before the JCCHS graduation.
