JPD searching for pack of wild dogs

Members of the Jefferson Police Department and Jackson County Animal Control are looking for a pack of apparently wild dogs near Jefferson schools that killed at least five goats on Thursday.

The dogs reportedly attacked the goats in an enclosed fence area near Jefferson Academy and Jefferson Middle School. When confronted by several adults, the dogs reportedly became very aggressive.

The enclosure is part of a detention pond area along Dragon Drive, behind Jefferson Academy. Several playgrounds for the academy are located nearby the enclosed area.

Those on the scene on Thursday afternoon believed that the dogs may have entered the enclosed area by crawling under the fence. At least five goats, including a young goat, were killed in the area. It was believed that as many as seven goats were in the area, but the additional two bodies weren't located. It is also possible that the goat's owner removed the two additional goats from the enclosure prior to the attack, according to those on the scene.

a siege-like fear is gripping the county as scared residents are trapped in their homes. On a potentially related note: dogs living along Holders Siding Road died after eating poisoned food. Is this poisoning in response to the dog pack, or an unconnected act of animal cruelty?

On a potentially related note: If you know anything about something like this and haven't reported it to the police, you should be in jail. Poisoning animals is a crime and hiding behind an "anon" name on here won't necessarily protect you. Perhaps the editor of this page should supply Jefferson PD with your IP address so that you can give any information you are aware of as testimony.

Were these "dogs living along Holders Siding Road" found poisoned in their own yard or another property? Are these the same dogs that are frequently all over the place because their negligent owner doesn't keep them put up in violation of the leash law? To be clear, I'm not trying to justify the poisoning in any way. Two wrongs don't make a right. But if these are the same dogs that are (were?) allowed to roam free and knowingly harass people, their owner could have prevented this situation in the first place by following the law himself.

I don't personally know about the dogs being poisoned. I heard about it 4th or 5th hand and thought it should be mentioned somewhere. I agree it would be a crime, but I don't know many details. Originally I heard all the dogs had died, but some of them are obviously still alive, so I'm not sure the grape-vine(including me) has all of its info right. To Interested, yes the dogs were some of the ones that roam, and I take your point. The reason I posted was because I was concerned that the timing might be more than coincidence and I guess I wanted people to be aware. I realize Tom Hays is implying that I should file a police report, but again, 4th or 5th hand really isn't police-report-worthy, I wanted to pass along what I'd heard and I thought this would be as good a place as any to share info concerning the community. If you'd like, you're welcome to do something with my info, but really you now know about as much as I do.

Yes, I'd like to know as well. I have a family member who lives in that area (Holders Siding Road) who very recently lost a beloved young dog.

letting dogs roam free is as much a crime as poisoning them ... why not arrest the dog owners and fine them? India has sacred cows ... are we Americans now supposed to have sacred dogs? All these dog problems are the result of irresponsible dog owners. Dogs are very dangerous animals ... children are killed every year by dogs. Literally ripped apart and dismembered. Don't believe me? Google dog attacks child and see how many hits come up.

Our cat was killed by a pack of dogs. We live in Holders Mill subdivision off of Holders Siding Road. We had let him outside for a little while and then couldn't find him. One of our neighbors found his body that had puncture wounds on it. (dog bites) We were extremely upset about this incident, but didn't report it to authorities.

Karen ... your cat may have been killed by coyotes ... cats will not survive outside if there are coyotes in the area ... cats wreak havoc on birds and other wildlife ... cats and other pets belong inside with their owners not roaming the countryside

I happened to see the dogs the morning that our cat went missing. They were IN MY YARD and were threatening to me. By the time my husband could get outside they were, of course, gone. Our cat was no threat to the "wildlife" in the subdivision. He wasn't even one year old yet. He slipped out the door before we could catch him and that was the last we saw of him alive.
