The Jackson County Board of Education named a current employee and a former employee to two positions in the central office during a brief called meeting on Thursday morning.
Jamie Hitzges — principal at North Jackson Elementary School — was named assistant superintendent for finance and information services, effective June 1. He will replace Jeff Sanchez, who is retiring on June 30.
The board also named April Howard — former assistant superintendent for teaching and learning for the Jackson County School System — the district’s director of curriculum and accountability, effective June 1. She will replace Kathy Miller, who is retiring from the position on June 30.
BOE names new assistant superintendent, director
Howard is currently employed by the Hall County School System as its school improvement specialist. Prior to that, she worked for the Jefferson City School System as its director of middle and secondary instruction. At one point, she was the interim principal at Jefferson Elementary School during a staff shortage.
Howard left the Jackson County School System in 2009, when she was an assistant superintendent. She also once served as principal of West Jackson Middle School.
Hitzges has been serving as principal of NJES since February 2011, when he replaced former principal Kathy Elrod — who was then named assistant superintendent for human resources.
Before moving to NJES, Hitzges was the assistant principal of West Jackson Intermediate School. He is also a former teacher of the year at Maysville Elementary School.
Hitzges earned his bachelor’s degree in elementary education from Florida International University, and taught kindergarten and third grade for three years in South Florida. He later took a job with Motorola and moved to Georgia, where he worked his way up the corporate ladder to become a senior business planning analyst.
Hitzges returned to education with a job at MES, and later earned his master’s in education and specialist degree in education administration and leadership.
He is married to Laurie Hitzges, who is now the assistant principal at WJIS. The couple have two children who attend Jackson County schools.
After Monday’s called meeting, the BOE went into a closed-door session to begin interviewing its candidates for superintendent. Shannon Adams is retiring from the job at the end of the school year.
