The chairman of the Jackson County Planning Commission said last week that the county isn’t enforcing its codes efficiently.
During a discussion about an amendment to the proposed Hwy. 124 and Hwy. 53 overlay district, chairman Tim Cornelison said he was concerned about how the restrictions would be enforced.
“I have an issue with the county on not enforcing … [codes],” Cornelison said, “This type of additional regulation and additional provisions in this district would create a greater enforcement issue. Number one, our code enforcement people are not backed up by the county… The fact is, we are not enforcing our codes very efficiently.”
The commission tabled a vote on the overlay district until it could study the matter further.
Cornelision said that he had discussed his concern about the lack of enforcement with members of the Jackson County Board of Commissioners. He said he had hoped that those issues would be resolved before the proposed overlay district was brought to the Planning Commission.
The MISSION of the Code Enforcement Division is to protect and maintain public health, safety, and enhance property value by enforcing adopted codes and ordinances on behalf of the Jackson County Boards of Commissioners.
Lets get on the ball folks. Our taxes are to high to have incompetent people running our Government. If enforcement took place and fines were assessed, the county could possibly pay ones salary.
going on for years. Where is code enforcement?
The elderly husband and wife live in a make shift shack
behind their home, and it doesn't comply with anyone's
standards! The wife let the duaghter and her children
move into the three bedroom home to raise the daughter's
children. Time has passed and the daughter was killed
in a car accident and the children have families of
their own and moved on, but the husband still lives
in the elderly couples house.
Where is code enforcement to hold someone responsible?
by the husband who will not move out. He thinks he owns it.
If an officer writes a citation for a violation of the code that citation should processed through the system and fines and penalties should be imposed if the citation is valid. This is not happening, at least not in all cases. Code enforcement officials cannot enforce the code if they are not backed up by the County officials who control their paychecks.
My comments were not directed at the code enforcement staff. The guilty parties know who they are. We need to put checks and balances in the system to prevent this type of meddling from continuing.
And what good does it do for code compliance to try and enfore a fine when all the individual has to do is make one maybe two phone calls and the fine just disappears. That has to be frustrating!!!
And as far as the husband who will not move out of a house that isn't his, I don't think this falls under code enforcement. Call the Sheriffs office, or go see the magistrate judge. I do believe that this falls under their territory.
Let code enforcement enforce their fines. No one is ever going to take them seriously if all an individual has to do is whine to certain officials to make it go away.
