Indictments handed down in animal cruelty case

A Jackson County Grand Jury indicted four people on Friday in connection with allegations of animal cruelty at L&D Kennel and Farm, Nicholson.

D. Marie Hughes, 55, James Ronnie Hughes, 56, Jennifer Hughes Epps, 35, and Brandy Stone, 26, were each indicted on two felony counts of aggravated cruelty to animals and 133 misdemeanor counts of cruelty to animals.

Each felony count of aggravated cruelty to animals carries a sentence of one to five years in prison and a fine of up to $15,000. Each misdemeanor count of cruelty to animals carries up to 12 months in jail and a fine of up to $1,000, according to Piedmont Judicial Circuit District Attorney Rick Bridgeman.

Arraignment is scheduled for Sept. 8, in Jackson County Superior Court.

Too bad you don't care, because that is what is wrong withour society now! More people should care about this type of crulity and it would be stopped. I do care! I adopted one of the animals fromm this bust...she was horribly abused...sores all over her, she had to have 18 teeth removed. She did not know how to eat or drink out of a bowl, only how to be agressive about food. There were as many as 7-8 dogs in each small cage, only there for breeding purposes.
Sad enviornment. This is the second time that these peple have been investigated, finally, maybe they will do prison time in the same type of cage that they had the wonderful animals in. Nothing too horrible could happen to them...as for my adopted pet, she is wonderful...happy, beautiful and loving like no other animal I have ever had. Thank God for the Rescue originazations that took these dogs, and bless all of those who DO CARE!

I absolutely agree with you! So sad that he doesn't care! These abusers deserve to be punished severely. Those poor animals DID NOT deserve the horrible abuse they suffered.I have 4 dogs myself and I cannot imagine them suffering in such a way as these poor animals did. I pray that all these precious animals have wonderful, loving homes now. I cannot believe human beings can be so very cruel!!

Cant believe people should be soooo cruel??????????? Look at the world around you and see abortion killing babies by the millions, people being murder in their own homes, child abuse and more crimes that does not stop and you cant believe people could be so cruel, nothing in this world is going to stop the suffering for humans or animals have you had bacon this morning or a steak for diner if so you are also very cruel for eating animal flesh.

I care, I hope they lose everything they own! Maybe they'll get treated in prison they way they treated those poor animals. I think they're low-life scum. I hope they are severely punished.

Poor People... They could get out of their cage and eat when they wanted.... They could clean their house and stay away from what they wanted...
I hope their is a conviction and stiff penalties... The animals are the ones that suffered!

WOW get over it the dogs are in a better place, thank God and you all keep whipping the pony...... you all need to get a life and volunteer your time with something that really matters. I heard Peta is looking for drivers. I also hope they find these low lifes and make them pay back what Jackson CO paid out for this rescue what was it 200,000? Who paid for this, tax payers?

But it's okay to kill babies in the third trimester, or even worse, the partial birth abortion provision???? Since when should an animal be placed above that of a human being??? This whole world is so out of balance. Kill a baby and you can "enjoy" your life and not have to be burdened with caring for an infant that might upset your lifestyle. But be cruel to a dog and you lose everything???? Don't you see that something is wrong here??????

I will bet most of these crying hearts, animals rights, doesnt see a thing wrong with abortion but look out if a dog or cat is abuse you all know why, its because of the money they make off the rescue donations and then they get to sell these stolen puppies and dogs for more money this is a MILLION dollar business for rescues know as the Human Society of America.

It has been a year since the previous DA indicted these people, what is going on now? Is the new DA not prosecuting them???
