JCSO employee fired after arrest

Long-time Jackson County Sheriff’s Office employee Gary Brewer has been fired following his arrest in Madison County.

Brewer was arrested on Dec. 5 by the Madison County Sheriff’s Office on charges of felony fleeing and attempting to elude a law enforcement officer, reckless driving and brake light violation.

Brewer has been employed with the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office for 20 years and was head of the civil courts division.

“Based on the fleeing and attempting to elude charge, a felony, we issued a termination of his employment,” David Cochran of the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office said. “He has appealed that to the sheriff. The sheriff will schedule a hearing.”

Cochran added that Brewer denies the charges against him.

According to the incident report from the Madison County Sheriff’s Office, a deputy spotted a light blue older model Dodge Sedan with no brake lights traveling on Hwy. 98. The deputy attempted to stop the car but the driver did not stop. The Madison County deputy noted in the incident report that his speed was 100 miles per hour when the chase was called off and he returned to the sheriff’s office.

The tag number on the vehicle was checked out and it came back as belonging to Eric Gary Brewer of 2821 Holly Springs Road, Pendergrass. Brewer was later arrested.

This is a "CRAP" charge unless the Madison Co. officer seen officer Brewer driving the car? If could have been someone else WHO BORROWED his car therefore they knew if they didn't stop they had NOTHING to lose. The car is registered to Brewer NOT them?

Really- He didn't turn himself in according to the Madison County Journal? It said he was later arrested. Now I ask you which paper do we put FAITH in to tell US the truth? The Athens Banner Herald has been wrong on a number of stories before? AND whos to say he didn't let someone borrow his car? If someone were to call and tell me I had done something wrong and I knew I didn't do it I would go up there to find out what was going on.

It's a little difficult understanding what you are trying to say with that double negative sentence. Beyond that, where do you see that JCSO charged him with anything? The article said that he was charged by Madison County SO.

Huh: The class does get it but the fact remains that JCSO would act no differently if it knew the tag number of the car they were chasing. They would arrest the owner as soon as possible.

I feel bad for anyone losing their job this time of year. I hope he cops (pun intended) a plea for a misdemeanor and gets Georgia's first offender status and gets his job back in about a year, after he's served a year probation.

The bigger question is why did he run? Most cops would look the other way for an officer, even if he were DUI.

That's the gospel truth!! Banks County caught a Habersham deputy drunk, coded over the legal limit for DUI and off he went, home, with his girlfriend driving the vehicle. All of a sudden it was hush hush, way to go Charlie.

Michael- By what you said I have to say if he is found guilty cart his butt off to prison BUT WHO has proof HE was driving the ONLY ones who know if HE was in fact driving that car God and HIM. How many of you have ever let someone borrow your car? I would file the biggest lawsuit in Georgia history. I would own Jackson Co. then I would fire WHOEVER was responsible for firing me. I would be sueing until the Lord comes back.

And I wouldn't be mad about doing it I would come in singing and dancing and may even make up a song about being fired? The SO should have suspended him until the outcome. If Brewer is found innocent then what ??? Hmm.

if my car flees JCSO is holding me responsible unless it has already been reported stolen. or I produce the driver or person I let use my car. be it my wife son daughter, crackhead neighbor whoever.
just cause the driver had the knowledge to run and out run the other Sheriffs dept doesnt give a free break. us non POLICE folks do not get a free break, glad Madison County followed up on this lets see if they have the stones to carry it all the way.

Let’s think about it …

A deputy who has warrants for his arrest walks into work and boom … gets arrested for outstanding warrants. Would that really be good?? He turned himself in because he knew that Jackson County had been notified of the warrants. Just because he turned himself in doesn’t mean he was in the car or had anything to do with it. I don't know all the circumstances but I'm willing to bet he wasn't in the vehicle.

givetheguyachance- AMEN that's what I been saying and it's notJUST the people on here that are so quick to Judge the Jackson County Sheriff's Department are just as guilty AND they should KNOW BETTEAR than to fire a man without the outcome of a trial? They should have suspended him UNTIL after the trial they if he was guilty fire him if not NO HARM NO FOUL BUT what if he's innocent what are they going to do hire him back? He would be an idiot to go back to work there if they didn't believe him this time who's to say they will believe him next time something happens? so why did David Cochran fire him.Did he not consult with the sheriff first.Why not suspend him until proven guilty.This guy has worked there for 20 years.Sheriff give him a break dont let this pass you by without a fair hearing.Just because David Cochran was in the happy seat of firing first then handing it to the sheriff later does not make a lot of sense to me.

The MCSO has to prove that this deputy is guilty beyond a reasonable doubt. if the MCSO deputy chasing him never saw the driver of the car he was chasing it will go to court and be thrown out. you can NOT be convicted because your car did something and you were not seen driving, they can IMPOUND the car until they find out who was driving.

think of it this way, if you were on the jury in this case and the defence asked the MCSO deputy who was driving the car and he said I never saw the driver would you be able to convict this man just because it was his car.

a little history,
the reason red light cameras are a civil violation against the vehicle and not a criminal violation against the driver is:
a driver stepped up in front of a judge and told the judge he was not driving the car, the D.A. asked who was driving and the man responded " its not my job to tell you who was driving my car its your job to figure it out" the judge agreed and dismissed the case.
now red light cameras are either a civil violation OR they have 2 cameras one to get the car and one to get the driver.
this is the same principal unless they saw who is driving they will not be able convict the owner.

Its just semantics I know but for the record the mcso does not have to prove anything beyond a reasonable doubt they got the arrest warrant they're done it's the prosecuting attorney's job to lay out a case that proves beyond a reasonable doubt. I do agree that a suspension would have been sufficient pending the outcome of the case.

The ones to blame here is JCSO you would think someone like the sheriff's Dept. would know to make sure every "T" is crossed and every "i" is dotted? I mean with all the lawyers they have? Although I am loathe to enter into a conversation with you FJCR I must point out that juries don't find people innocent. They either find them guilty or not guilty. Courts never find anyone innocent beyond a reasonable doubt. Only guilty beyond a reasonable doubt. I'm sure the JCSO is on solid ground firing this officer. Officers should not be above the law and action was warranted, I'm sure. The JCSO is not a stupid organization.

Michael- Did I say the JCSO was stupid? NO I DID NOT. I think they just made a rush decision to make themselves look like they are on top of their game. I have NEVER heard of an officer being fired WITHOUT an investigation. They are always suspended UNTIL the investigation is completed.

Yes concerned- You are right AND the same people who fired him after ONE mistake(if he did it) would want more than one chance? I know of officers who have had at least 5 chances AND they are still on patrol? And what happen I thought at JCSO if you made a mistake or if the "POWERS THAT BE" got mad at you they just demoted you. This was taking it a little to far. They could have uspended him without pay pending the outcome of the trial?

What a crock. The charge won't even stick because the state won't be able to prove it was him driving. I just assume it was him because it's just another example of people in law enforcement who think laws don't apply to them. They all have bad attitudes and posturing. Jackson County Sheriff's Office doesn't have civil service. The number one rule when you go to work for the office is to know Stan (the man) is Boss. If your actions make him look bad your ass is out on the street faster than a speeding bullet. Do you really believe you would win a court case in Jackson County where the man has been sheriff for years. Look at the history and all the employees who have left? the sheriff's office. Coc hran and all the other employees don't do anything unless the Man tells then to. Man this organization is run like a kingdom. Mike Buffington and the Man are good buddies.

That's why I would ask that the trial be moved far out of the county somewhere where the people don't know Stan or nothing about the case because finding someone in Jackson County to go against Stan Evans is going to be harder than finding a Saint in a WHORE HOUSE? I don't know if he was driving the CAR, not a boat he wasn't going fishing was he? That would put a whole new twist on the story. The Headline would read: Man arrested for driving Boat down Highway.

was bohering the kid, who just got off work, was sweating from working, the kid had a mohawk this officer could not have cared less about this kid other then to point out he is an officer and this kid better listen and upon learning the kid was not a mischievious criminal type it aggravated the officer this kid who the officer engaged would not go away, so as long as the officer is the one asking stuid questions and demanding to be addressed in amnner he likes it all good, first this kid was not committing any crime it is none of the polices business where people are coming or going to if there is no sign they are commiting crimes, he was bossy and aggresive toward this kid the kids took the high road mohawk and all, this officer tried to make this kid bow down but then got aggravatted when the kid was way to chattie and not one to be broken... lol this time the officer got aggravated cause the teenie bopper he was hitting on lost interest.....
