Sunday alcohol sales now allowed in Jefferson

Beer and wine sales are allowed in Jefferson on Sundays following approval Monday night by the city council of an ordinance outlining the guidelines.
The action follows approvals by Jefferson voters in the recent town election, in a 368-246 vote, to allow Sunday sales.

The ordinance states that alcohol sales will only be allowed in retail stores that devote 50 percent of their floor space and storage area to other products. Sales will also only be allowed in zoning districts where these alcohol sales are allowed.

Was it unanimous? If not, are the votes of the individual councilmen available in the print edition?

The article published in the Athens Banner stated that is was a unanimous vote.

I still don't understand this Sunday alcohol sales thing. No one is going to make any more money than what was being made before. It's a well known fact that people who wanted to drink on Sundays would simply by their alcohol on Saturday for the next day. Now we're going to be more likely to have more people who have been drinking running around on Sunday to buy more alcohol when they run out. This simply means our police are going to be more tied up having to watch for drunks or dealing with accidents.

I guess all this doesn't really matter though. I mean good grief, we've taken God out of almost EVERYTHING else! Why not go ahead and take Him out of Sunday as well. Way to go guys. Great job on this one.

Jesus drank wine. There is nothing un-Christian about drinking alcoholic beverages.

What are you, like a hundred? Get with the times. Ga was only one of 3 states left to not permit Sunday sales. And after research and studies they concluded no further incidents would occur. There are 50 states now not 13 incase you didn't know.

We should close grocery stores on Sunday too. People who are obese/gluttons should not be allowed to indulge their sin on Sunday.

The matter went to a public vote, and was approved the people voted and it passed.
The council voted on what the majority wanted.
Georgia is one of the last places where the Sunday laws where still in place... not anymore.

seems unfair to prevent a liquor/beer store from selling alcohol just because then don't have 50% of the stock in non-alcohol products.

Who cares? The bigger problem is drugs. Prohibition failed on alcohol. America is fighting a losing battle with all drugs anyway.

Legalize it (drugs). Because illegal or legal people will do what they want to do laws or no laws.

USA citizens in border towns, farms, ranches, are not safe. Ranchers have been told to not go onto their own property or wear bullet proof clothing as well as arm themselves.

Many ranchers have moved their families off the ranch for fear of the cartels.

America is becoming a 3rd world country.

America has turned away from God.

Glory be! Sunday alcohol sales will make it easier on me. I can now get my beer on my way to A___Church. I'm really a good person. I love to have fun but I also go to church to repent for any of my transgressions. I'm glad it is ok to buy and comsume alcohol on Sunday. That is one thing thing I can tell some preachers about. I also won't have to be giving bootleggers anymore money on Sunday.
