The I.W. Davis Detention Center in Jefferson will close as of Oct. 1.
The Georgia Department of Corrections announced Thursday that the center will close as part of a plan to shut down smaller facilities and increase capacity at the larger ones.
Future plans for the state-owned facility have not been determined but Jackson County leaders have expressed an interesting in leasing the building. County manager Darrell Hampton said Monday that the county has sent the state a letter stating its interest in the building. He said the county doesn’t yet have any definite plans for the facility.
The I.W. Davis Detention Center houses probationers sentenced by the courts and operates at a cost of $2.4 million per year. There are 54 employees working at the center and they will all be offered positions within a 50-mile radius.
Offenders who do not complete their sentence prior to the closing will be transferred to one of five other centers across the state. To accommodate this, triple bunks have been put in place at those facilities.
Work details currently being provided by the I.W. Davis Detention Center will be reassigned to other facilities.
I know that the cost to run the facility might not offset the savings from the workers but hey it is worth looking into.
With contract labor you can do competitive bidding and have some legal recourse if the job is not done right.
Inmate labor is an outdated solution from the past that eats up your taxes...for what ?
A job half done by inmates who are just trying to kill time.
IW Davis would have been a perfect new county jail...had county leadership been patient. instead we are building another "good ole boy" monument along with our courthouse and mega fire training center.
Hopefully the state will shut down JCCI soon and stop practicing 1930's government.
look into it please!!!
