One person was killed in an accident on Interstate 85 in Braselton on Thursday that involved three vehicles and a number of other passengers that were sent to area hospitals, according to the Georgia State Patrol.
Around 4 p.m., a vehicle with eight passengers apparently had some type of mechanical issue — possibly a flat tire — and was traveling slowly in the northbound lane of I-85 between the Ga. Hwy. 211 and Ga. Hwy. 53 exits, according to a trooper.
Another vehicle — with two passengers — rear-ended the first vehicle, which then overturned on the interstate, according to the state patrol. A third vehicle — a tractor-trailer truck with one passenger — was also involved in the accident.
Pau L. Mung, 23, of Clarkston, was killed on the scene. He was one of eight passengers in the first vehicle
The West Jackson Fire Department said three people were trapped in the first vehicle and had to be extricated.
One entrapped patient, Mung, died of his injuries prior to be extricated.
Three people were taken to Northeast Georgia Medical Center and three to Athens Regional Medical Center, according to the state patrol. Another person was taken by helicopter to Atlanta Medical Center. Two other people involved in the wreck refused to be taken to a hospital.
The northbound lanes of I-85 were closed for about two and a half hours on Thursday, although one lane was open for a time, according to a trooper. Onlooker southbound traffic was backed up for several miles, as well.
The Georgia State Patrol said its Specialized Collision Reconstruction Team (SCRT) is investigating the fatal accident and charges are pending. There is a language barrier with the driver of the first vehicle, according to a trooper.
The West Jackson Fire Department, Barrow County Fire/EMS, Jackson County EMS and Braselton Police Department responded to the accident.
