Jefferson calls for vote on Sunday alcohol sales

Jefferson voters will go to the polls on Nov. 8 to cast their ballot on allowing the Sunday sale of alcohol, as well as the sale of distilled spirits in the city limits.

The vote calling for the referendum on alcohol sales passed 4-1 with councilman Bosie Griffith voting against the action and Kathy DuBose, Steve Kinney, C.D. Kidd and Roy Plott voting in favor of it.

“Personally, if it was on the ballot tomorrow, I would not vote for it but I feel I should let my constituents decide if they want it or not,” said councilman Steve Kinney.

I don't know about you, but I don't want a liquor store in the Kroger shopping center, adjacent corners or downtown. We have plenty of stores close by without putting them in the city limits. My home value has lost enough. I wouldn't buy a home within walking distance to a liquor store.

I applaud the action of the Jefferson Mayor and
Council. The voters deserve the right to vote on an issue such as this. I hope the Commerce Mayor and Council will give their voters the right to decide these issues. Presently all
the cities of Jefferson and Commerce are missing is hundreds of thousands of tax dollars now going to Athens, Arcade, Pendergrass and Braselton....Bravo for Mayor Joiner and the Council.

Last thing I want is for Jefferson to be like Athens, Arcade, Pendergrass and Braselton. Jefferson has always been a cut above. I've never heard anyone say, "we found a really quaint home in Arcade - - it is known for being a nice neighborhood and community with great schools." Just sayin..... something to think about. This vote is more than just tax dollars and being able to buy liquor on Sunday.

This is a free country and the product is not illegal to buy. I think this legal product should be available for sale to people who want to buy it anytime they want to. I would love to be able to go into a place to eat and be able to buy an alcoholic beverage if I wanted. Kroger already sale Beer and Wine so why not all alcohol products? I'll vote yes because as free adults we should be able to exercise our rights.

It's about time we catch up to the rest of the world on this issue. It is time to put our freedom and rights ahead of the religeous beliefs that has made this country fee like we are still in the middle ages.
