A Jefferson police officer wrecked his patrol vehicle on Aug. 18 while running radar on Brockton Road.
Officer Lee New was running stationary radar when he checked a car speeding and pulled out into the road. He pulled out into the path of a white truck coming from the opposite direction, causing extensive damage to his patrol vehicle.
“It was clearly my fault for pulling out,” Officer New wrote in the incident report.
He also noted that it is a “dangerous spot from which to run radar.”
Officer New was also reportedly involved in a minor accident one week earlier while running patrol in the same location.
We have to ride our breaks hard here, down hill, because the cops sit at the bottom of the hill and give gravity tickets.
Cars going down hill will go 40 if left alone.
No coasting to save gas around here.
We have to break even if we start out at a slow speed.
I travel this road several times a day and constant breaking, no coasting, keeps me from getting tickets. So non locals please don't ride our tails.
Realize your ON A DOWN HILL $PEED TRAP folks.
Let's get speed bumps not speed traps.
This would keep families in the speed trap area safe while also decreasing expensive radar accidents.
However, can speed bumps be placed on state roads? I have only noticed speed bumps in neighborhoods, schools, and retail stores?
How would we go about getting a couple?
How about those speed humps instead of the bumps-lot less damage to tires, front ends and bigger trucks hauling things?
Does NOBODY even give the guy credit for taking the blame for this? How many cops do you know that wouldn't try to blame it on the OTHER drive?
At least he admitted that it was CLEARLY his fault. MOST people wouldn't!!!
Please do sit there again so I can send a picture to the state and have your radar permit yanked.
Dave Hill you and the Chief know better then to allow this to keep going on !
Also folks that is a state highway and as such no speed bumps etc. DOT will pull the city funding for repaving etc if they where to do that.
Shame on the Jefferson PD and shame on the 3 people on that road who constantly complain about the traffic. Your as much too blame as the PD.
When you buy a house on a state hwy there will be get ready for it... traffic !
Yes, it's important to show caution in a residential area, but it is absolutely horrible how much this section is targeted for speeders. Jefferson PD, don't you all have better things to do than try to trap your citizens in extremely minor violations?
I don't blame the officer, he was merely doing as he was ordered. I blame the Chief. Do better!
Dear Police: We respect you for what you do but you're not above the law and you're not hired to annoy us too much. Don't forget who pays your salary.
However, the officer is creating a safety hazard for drivers.
Wrecks are costly and outweigh any financial gain.
Safety for all needs to be the goal here.
There has to be another solution.
IMO...they are fabricating tickets a lot of the time. Fudging about the speed or running red lights, etc...
Jefferson is and has always been a dirty police department, and it should be getting better as the old good-ol-boy networks are being looked at closer these days, but it is not happening yet in Jefferson.
Sad thing also is that they hire so many folks that can't even speak or write basic English. I've heard them talking broken English so many times it makes me want to puke. "I done got that taken care of. Ain't gonna' happen again", kid of stuff. Just horrible English. It makes them look so stupid.
You must not be from around here(the south) those examples you gave are "normal" southern sayings (and since the teachers say these sayings the same way it must be correct).
You make accusations of the police department being "dirty" pleae explain I as a citizen want to know how my police department is dirty.
Way to agressive handing out tickets. I for one cant believe they fabricate that many tickets, so maybe some of the public feels they should be able to break the law with no consequence. I have been on the bypass when a car flys by me, and brocton rd. if I lived on that road I would welcome the police out there slowing down the idiots that fly up and down that road. look around you as you drive and you will see how many people drive like they have a right to do ANYTHING THEY WANT.
It is proven that speed KILLS, (lets face it if you know they are going to give you a ticket for speeding you WILL slow down and that could save your life)
So Andrew please answer those 2 questions for me
1. are you from the south?
2. how is the police department dirty
I hope the citizens of Jackson County can see what they have to represent the executive branch of the government. It's very sad. All you people have done is prove my point.
“Fab 5”: he has every right to say what he wants about our government and its’ employees. Yeah he goes on rants but for every rant there is a ring of truth to what he writes. I do find it funny that you guys go out of your way to bash him but seemingly look forward to his posts. There is a name for you five, it’s called an audience and you are his.
“Who cares”: for someone who served so many years I’d like to know why your skin isn’t thicker. A seasoned veteran wouldn’t care less what Michael writes. And as long as your diatribe is I find you hypocritical to use the moniker of “who cares…” obviously you do or else you wouldn’t have written a paragraph.
“Have seen” Don’t generalize just because Michael doesn’t like a few police doesn’t mean he doesn’t like police or the idea of police. I know for a fact he doesn’t harbor ill thoughts toward all police. And yes he has been arrested, but unless you are a cop, because of his experience he has a better understanding of the system than you.
And for all of you, don’t confuse his passion for a lack of intelligence. The man is very smart and convicted. It can just be difficult balancing those two sometimes. Remember, even Jesus was a rebel in his day.
You have a lot of nerve sitting in the safety of your home on your little computer bashing people who you don't know. No matter what the situation is, you have to have your say about. I remember you being arrested and taken into the Jackson County jail in the past, so I am guessing that you are anti police because they dared to arrest YOU when YOU were violating the law and the POLICE were doing there job. I am pretty sure that you are not as intelligent as you like people to think. When you only bash people in this way, instead of going to meetings and trying to find a solution to something, you are contributing to the problem. I, for one am sick of you and your smart comments and will not longer read them.
i got a ticket from that same officer at that exact spot, on our way to church, on a Sunday morning, a while back.
running a small town speed trap isn't right. never has been and never will be. it's rinky dink, small town junk. it's what keeps jackson co./jefferson where they are.
everynow and then, though, you hear about something that reminds you that when you do wrong for long enough, eventually it will catch up to you.
Also, I recall Darren Glen having the opportunity to testify before the grand jury considering his idictment. Ordinary people are not afforded this luxury.
The officers now parks in a new area. Up the road a bit, facing the intersection, but now at night. He is parallel to the road and in total darkness.
I hope this officer can keep us safe by avoiding accidents.
He also needs to know that a lot of people walk on the road in this area.
Everyone from young families to an older woman alone.
This speed trap is hurting me as a LAW ABIDING Brockton Road Resident.
