JHS basketball coach wins lottery game

More memorable than winning games is winning a $200,000 prize playing the Georgia Lottery. Paul Gibson of Jefferson won his top prize playing the instant game EZ Grand.

The Kroger on Old Pendergrass Road in Jefferson sold the winning ticket.

“‘Wow’ was my initial reaction,” said Gibson, 37. “I told my mother-in-law, who thought we were joking around.”

Gibson, who enjoys playing golf, is both a sports coach and a school teacher. He and his wife, Jennifer, have three children, ages 10, 7 and 2. Gibson is the girls’ basketball coach at Jefferson High School.

The couple have no plans at the moment for their winnings.

This is not the first time for "Paul" to stumble on dinero. It also happens every pay day. Tina, it is obvious you dont know him very well. How many Jefferson teams lost to Banks County and Jackson County this year?

Perhaps it might be a smart move for Coach Gibson to take some of his winnings and participate in some type of sports ethics program. For some odd reason the Sports Illustrated ethics program the JPRD is trying to insist they practice didn't quite trickle down to Mr. Gibson. Or he might even consider taking some girls basketball coaching lessons. A record like his wouldn't fly in the big city!

Telling it like it is, which is better than most people in Jefferson would do. They will shake your hand and piss in your pocket. Anyone who has ever had their kid/s coached by Mr. Gibson know the real deal. They're either too ignorant to check this website or they're too scared of standing up for the truth! It's not about winning in youth football it's about teaching the kids the game & teaching them teamwork. It should NOT be Daddy ball town like it is at our Rec Dept!

HAHAHAHAHA! Jealous, hardly! I make that in my annaual salary and come by it through hard work and an honest, fair living. Anyone that would play favorites in little league football gets no respect from me. Pity is what I offer, and pity only!

Maybe Gibson will take that $200 K and pay off some of the debt of losing his last home in Traditions---jealous, nah!

He is a glorified babysitter as the In School Suspension "teacher" who makes over $80,000 a year because he has his Specialist's degree. Why is it that in these budget conscience days of education are we paying a man a Specialist's salary for a parapro's job? Did I mention that he gets a planning period just like all other full time teachers who actually teach? What is he planning or grading during that 90 minute period? I guess he'll have even more of a reason to look rested as the school year progresses - just as the rest of the teachers are exhausted and spread too thinly.

Shelly, your anger is directed at the wrong person. The issues you raise should be addressed to the school system, not Coach Gibson. Gibson does not set his salary, nor does he assign himself a 90 minute planning.

Sounds like a lot of jealous and misinformed people are writing responses on this story. I know this family pretty well. They are a good family and good citizens of the city. I am happy for them.

No one is perfect, except for the people criticizing them on this blog I guess...

I agree that these people are nice and good citizens and I agree that these issues of his inflated pay for what he does needs to be addressed with the BOE. He's just one of those lucky educators who does not have to done hardly anything for his pay. 99% of the teachers I know barely make ends meat, are overextended in every aspect of their schools, and can hardly afford to live in Traditions (as mentioned earlier by someone else). Something to chew on tax payers.

I'm not saying they aren't nice people. My son was on his football team for JPRD. He and his wife were nice and polite. HOWEVER, He was a coach that only cared about making his son a star, who, by the way, couldn't even play THAT well. He had his elite group of 4-5 boys that he focused on and only cared about winning, not teaching and developing the team as a whole. I think it's great that they won some money, but I don't know that I would say they deserve it. Sadly, my son wants to play football but I have not signed him up because of the problems with the coaches.

Supermom, it is unfortunate that you did not sign your child up for football. Did you know that JPRD has 2 teams this year in that age group? If you would have signed your son up, maybe you would have been lucky enough to be with the 17 kids that DO NOT have to play for such a coach as this anymore. If you felt so strongly about his coaching principles, did you bother to tell anyone, or were you one of the ones that just sat back and complained silently?
