County schools to have 10 furlough days

The likelihood that revenue will continue to dwindle next school year will cost Jackson County School System employees two more furlough days.

The Jackson County Board of Education on Monday approved a revised 2011-2012 school calendar that includes two additional furlough days for employees — bringing the total to 10 furlough days next school year. The change won’t affect students and the number of days they’re in class.

The move is expected to save the cash-strapped district almost $500,000, according to superintendent Shannon Adams.

I thought teachers were contracted employees? Can someone explain how contracts can be signed year after year, and the school board repeatedly change the number of days and amount of pay after contracts are signed by both parties? This latest furlough has come awfully late in the game, and awfully quietly. I for one would like to see if $500,000 could be saved elsewhere. Something tells me it would not take the most brilliant accountant in the world to find another fix.

The contracts that are signed have # of days worked in place of an actual number...so the number sign and not a number.

They also have not had an actual salary for the last 3 years or so.

Teachers have been signing contracts without much info on them.

Actually the contracts that were signed this year DID HAVE 190 DAYS on them but teachers are only getting paid for 180. Instead of putting their salary on the contracts they have opted to give them a salary schedule and something along the lines of the following example.

ie. Salary will be based on a T-5 salary scale with 4 years experience.

Jackson Co will begin losing good teachers. There are plenty of places to cut without having to furlough teachers. This now places JC as one of the lowest paid teacher salaries in the area. Admin continues to make plenty, the system continues to waste taxpayer money.... unreal.......

You are missing the point people! The only budget item question that matters is: Was there enough money taken from teachers to give Dr. Adams his yearly raise? Everything else is secondary. Who are you people to complain about teacher pay when Admin needs raises? I mean I am certain that some administrator needs another secretary. Maybe a buddy or family member of somebody important needs a job, did you think about that? Geez! It isnt your money! It's THEIR money!

Well, I for one think this is a very un-classy way for teachers to learn of this information. At last report we were going to have 8 furlough days. The school board at least could have told us via an e-mail or memo before this was posted online in the newspaper.

I agree with you. Someone should have contacted the staff before it came out in the Jackson Herald (or on Facebook). This is a complete lack of consideration for the staff of the Jackson County School System.

Teacher's should be the top paid professionals after all our future is in their hands. It's a shame they are the ones who keep getting cuts in pay while the admins seem to stay at the top. Where I come from whats good for the goose is good for the gander. It's easy to sit in an office and take away from those under you, maybe they should let us taxpayers vote on who gets cuts and who doesn't.

The school sytsem could not and cannot afford 2 high schools (East Jackson should have never been built) Kings Bridge is not needed and now the teachers are paying for very poor financial and administrative mismanagement. Teachers will leave, coaches will leave, students will suffer in an already bad situation. The teachers should have been contacted prior to hearing about it in the paper. Just another reason why our county will fall further behind in everything we do.

Counties in the area that pay more and furlough less:
Clarke
Oconee
Oglethorpe
Hall
Hart
Franklin
Jefferson City Schools
Greene
and there are many, many more!

Think teachers will start looking for new jobs? They are out there. I wonder how these school systems, and many more, are able to avoid furloughing their staff 10 days?

Until the community stands up against the BOE! Things are never going to change. Change will only happen in numbers. So let's get to together tax payers and do something about it. Just don't complain actions speak louder than words.
We have great teachers that do care! Let's not loose them.

Leaving on you might want to check your information because Jackson County School System pays more than Jefferson City School System. I grant it some may be higher, but it depends on the degree you hold or years of service you have. But for the majority the county pays their employees better. And for the record Jefferson City employees had 10 furloughs last school year, and have to take 8 this year.
