The 2011 8th grade writing test in January showed that students in Kings Bridge Middle School continued to have academic struggles. The school's 28.8 percent failure rate on the writing test was the worst in Jackson County and among the worst in the state.
West Jackson had a 14.8 percent failure rate, East Jackson Middle School a 10.5 percent failure rate, Jefferson Middle School a 10.4 percent failure rate and Commerce Middle School a 7.6 percent failure rate.

Your child's future is worth the investment.
Goodbye.
Why don't you see if you can rate how your Newspaper
and your morals do against others. You seem
to thrive in being a complete and totally uncaring
ASS to others who are trying as best they can
to help others.
Thanks,
James Howington
And if it were not for MIKE there would be no controversy. He does not care about anyones feelings or the REAL people or the REAL classroom or the REAL COMPLETE FACTS on any issue.
Dr. Morris is a fine and wonderful person, a Fine and Wonderful Caring person who cares about people. She is something way on the other end from where YOU ARE Mr. Buffington.
KBMS cares, YOU don't!!
The last time this person was discussed all the beans spilled out.
It wasn't pretty.
It is then simple math to look and see that this number is indeed higher than the other numbers also quoted in this article.
Makes me really worried about our math scores.
Being the parent of Jackson students makes me glad I keep pushing them to do better than the average. It takes more than good teachers to have good students. If you just drop your kids off at school and expect the teachers to do all the work you are short changing your kids. It is ultimately the parents job to make sure their kids are well educated. When you see them struggle you need to step in and not just wait for the teachers to do it. How would your work prosper if our attitude was well it's not my job?
Perhaps you should consider taking the 8th grade writing test yourself. I doubt you could pass it. Your editorial column, and other articles you "write", which appears in The Jackson Herald are obviously edited heavily by another individual with a much greater command of the English language. As evidence of your inability to write effectively, I point to the Publisher's Blog, which is accessible at the top of this web page. Your musings there are filled with misspellings, dangling prepositions, improper use of punctuation, etc.
You should not be so quick to judge when your own ability is so inadequate.
Furthermore, the most important factor in the success of a student has nothing to do with the teacher in the classroom, the administrator in the office, or the school a child attends. It has to do with the parents of that student, and how involved they are in the education of their child. Additionally it is impossible to judge how far a person has traveled, based solely upon where he now stands. You also must know where he came from. Kings Bridge Middle School has a much higher percentage of children who are from disadvantaged homes than other schools in the county. As a percentage, there are far more parents who are unconcerned about their children's education in the Kings Bridge Middle School area than there are at the other county and city schools. The 8th graders at Kings Bridge Middle School may not have statistics as impressive as other schools, but you should see how far most of them have come! The administration and teachers at that school should be commended for their effort and dedication to the education of each and every student in their school. Nobody else could do a better job, especially Mr. Buffington.
Attack me all you want, it doesn't change the facts. The numbers speak for themselves and they show KBMS students are lagging their peers in the county.
"Your editorial column, and other articles you 'write', which appears in The Jackson Herald are obviously edited heavily by another individual with a much greater command of the English language."
Perhaps YOU should not be so quick to judge when your own ability is so inadequate.
"Your editorial column and the articles you write are obviously edited heavily by someone else - someone with a far greater command of the English language."
And by the way - another first-semester journalism student assignment: describe the difference between an article and a column. Focus specifically on the acceptable/non-acceptable use of the writer's opinion in each.
KBMS has a poverty rate of 64%, almost the same as EJMS which is 61%. (EJMS actually has more poverty students than KBMS, but is slightly larger.)
So why is it that EJMS did significantly better on the CRCT scores last year than KBMS? Why was KBMS three times worse on the 8th grade writing test than EJMS?
If poverty were the only factor, wouldn't the two schools be about the same?
You can't excuse KBMS poor performance and blame it on poverty when EJMS has about the same demographics, yet does far better than KBMS year after year.
Could it be that school leadership DOES make a difference?
Your local BOE is in charge of them selves. If you call the state BOE they are going to tell you to go back to your local BOE! The only way you can get any help or changes made from the BOE is going to be in numbers. And by that I mean parents to back you. People that are willing to fight the fight with you in numbers. Not just a couple of people. ALOT OF PEOPLE ARE NEEDED! That is the only way they are going to listen to you....Good luck!
Go to KBMS and ask about Rapunzel. You
Will then have a real story. Just ask around.
