Man dies in Sunday motorcycle wreck; I-85 wreck kills Gwinett woman

A man reportedly died from injuries he received in a motorcycle wreck Sunday morning in Jefferson.

The wreck happened around 11:30 a.m. at the intersection of the Damon Gause Bypass (Hwy. 129) and Hwy. 11.

The man was transported to Athens Regional Medical Center and reportedly died of his injuries.

The Georgia State Patrol was working the incident and no official report was available as of early Monday. The victim has not be identified.

Early Monday morning, a wreck on I-85 near the Jefferson interchange killed a Lawrenceville woman. Maria Herrera, 46, died when a truck overturned.

No further details were available.

I thought the exact same thing, it is enough the accident happened and they have to deal with that, but to make news out of it with this type of photo was taste-less, mean, rude, stupid, just not right.... Why would you even want to get a picture of this anyway? Shame on you.

Would this picture have been printed if the victim had been son/daughter/father/mother/sister/brother of Mainstreet News staff? Sad.

So sorry for the loss. We will be praying for both families involved. The man that caused this wreck works with my husband and isn't handling it very well. I pray that God helps both families deal with this horrible tragedy. Lord we never know why bad things happen but we do know that all things are in your hands. GOD BLESS!

I hate when newspapers put wreck victims photos for everyone to view. How horrible for that family to open the paper and see their loved one laying on the ground like that. No respect what so ever. SO sad ...My thoughts and prayers are with this family!

I saw this accident right after it happened I was on a motorcycle myself and was horrified. It was the worst thing ever to experience and has made me think twice about riding. I feel so bad for the family and GOD BLESS!!

I was at this wreck and noticed Mike being quite respectful actually.
Trust me on this.
Just be glad you did not see this in person.

I have been told by a witness that there was some speeding involved.
I have now witnessed 3 wrecks at this intersection. I hate going through it.
I wish there was a turning lane for those of us headed to Athens.

I happened on this accident about an hour after it happened. I also ride a motorcycle and there was no double in my mind how bad it was. The fireman I talked to confirmed it. My prayers go out to the family of the deceased.
As far as the picture goes perhap it will give people pause to consider the way they drive. Look twice and procede with caution.

We do not publish gory photos. This photo captured the scene where a tragedy took place. That is news and while it may evoke an emotional response, that does not make it inappropriate or insensitive.
Sometimes, publishing wreck photos makes a larger point, such as with the Kroger intersection in Jefferson where several people died before a red light was installed. Would that have happened had it not been for the slew of photos we published which showed the danger of that intersection?
In addition, such photos document the work of various fire, EMS, law enforcement and other public safety workers. Outside of education, that's where most local tax dollars are spent. Why not report on their work in a very real way?
This particular photo was one I made; it does show the scene, but is not an explicit photo.
And as someone mentioned here, this intersection has seen a lot of wrecks. I'm not sure who was at fault in this tragedy, but that intersection lacks sufficient left turn signals and will continue to be dangerous until that is resolved.

Mr. Buffington, I assure you that if this was your family member you WOULD find this to be distateful. The victim is related to me and I assure you that my family IS disturbed by this photo, especially since, due to unfortunate circumstances, this photo was published BEFORE some of the family could even be reached. On behalf of my family and his, I would respectfully ask that you TAKE THIS DOWN. Prove your point some other way. This is just disrespectful to everyone involved.
