Six students charged in EJCHS fight

Six female students at East Jackson Comprehensive High School were charged Wednesday following an early morning fight in the school’s cafeteria. Four of the students were charged as juveniles while two 17-year-olds were charged as adults. All are Hispanic.

Karen Alejandra Castillo, 17, Nicholson and Tania Itzel Reyes, 17, Nicholson were charged with Affray, Disruption of a public school, assault/battery and simple battery.

One juvenile was just charged with disruption of a public school since she didn’t take part in the physical altercations. Another juvenile was charged with battery due to injuries she inflicted during the fight, along with the other charges.

The other two juveniles were charged the same as the two 17-year-olds.

EJCHS principal told Jackson County Sheriff’s Officers to charge all six girls in what was described as a “huge fight” in the cafeteria. The cafeteria was put on lockdown during the fight, which affected around 40 students being late to class.

The incident happened after allegations of “bumping” on the bus between the girls on Tuesday and the Friday before.

Booklady you're equating violence with being offered "marijuana laced pancakes"? I absolutely would prefer my child be offered pot than be threatened with violence in the cafeteria.
I get the added benefit of not only knowing my child is safe, I also have the knowledge that my child can get into a good college.

Your original comment that you would prefer your children grow up feral rather than attend the county schools is about the most inane and ridiculous statement that I have heard regarding the differences between the school systems. My son graduated from Jefferson and I am aware of their excellent academic programs but don't buy into the premise that the county schools are inferior. They have the same level of dedication from the teachers as does Jefferson and send out graduates every year to compete very well in the college and job market.

Well, avidgolfer, I can tell you're new here. I graduated from a Jackson County school, and it took me years to recover from it.
If you don't know the differences between the schools, don't bother commenting. I would indeed rather my child be feral. (and, likely still end up better educated)

Jane, Jane, Jane, I am not getting into a silly contest with you about how much I know or don't know about the respective schools in question other than to say that I have lived in the same house in Jefferson for 36 years. While this might seem like a newcomer to some 'native'Jeffersonians, I have seen a lot of changes and improvements in all three school systems in Jackson County. All three have their strengths and weaknesses but all deserve our support in their efforts to educate our children; even the feral ones that you seem so hung up on.

AG, AG, AG, I support (by force) Jackson County schools with my taxes and you'd have to be a fool to not see what a waste that is. Trust me, (or don't) the "schools" have not improved in tandem with the raise in rates and spending. I lament the fact that I have relatives who are forced to attend some of those expensive nurseries.
And, since you appear to be confused, you and I don't share any children.

I went to JC and I came out just fine! Most of my classmates went on to college or straight to the work force and have been successful.
And I can promise you, "AG" is very thankful he doesn't have children with you!

Exactly.. 'All were Hispanic' is completely unnecessary, fights happen continuiously in the school systems, have always, and will always occur.

I haven't seen an article yet saying, '5 white guys deface buildings and fight over school rivalry' and the rest.

And mind you just because they are 'hispanic' doesn't mean they are from Mexico, or even illegal immigrants. You're ignorance is distastful and part of why Jackson Co is how it is. That racisim you are teaching your children is more of a problem than a little fighting in the cafeteria.

Why are we so caught up in which school is better or worse? The rivalry between the 3 different school systems in Jackson County has gotten way out of hand. How are we showing our children that arguing and fighting is wrong when we sit on the computer, as adults, and argue over which school system is best? Also, why are we so concerned about people of a different race? Shouldn't everyone get equal rights to education? Just because your parent or grandparent came from a different country doesn't mean that you should sit at home and not become a productive citizen. Children who are born in the US are US citizens and deserve equal rights to education. Obviously, we all have family members from different countries or we wouldn't be here, unless you are 100% Native American. We should all be concerned with the REAL issue here, the fact that children at school are getting into fights. The fight was a direct result of someone, “bumping into them.” How ridiculous. As parents we should teach our kids at home that this is unacceptable behavior and will not be tolerated. Jackson County administrators showed that this is unacceptable behavior at school by getting the police involved. Every school in Jackson County has fights, it happens everywhere. (Although that does not make it right) Most of the time fights do not get put in the newspaper.

Why are we caught up? Because our tax dollars are being pumped into this failure at an alarmingly increasing rate.
They can't teach the students and now they can't keep them from gang banging IN THE SCHOOL?

Not trying to offend you, Jane, but your posts are so angry that most people are just going to ignore you as one of those irate individuals who are so blinded by their own emotions that they see only the negative side of the issue. As a consequence, nothing you write is going to influence anybody to see things from your perspective.

Basically, regardless of the validity of any of your statements, people will assume that you are just a crackpot and ignore you.

Try changing the tone of what you say and how you say it. You might actually find some support for your position if you do.

Wow, this is better than Jerry Springer. You make Jackson County proud. Where should I start. Do I want to wade into this? We have an avid golfer commenting on schools. After passing the latest SPLOST vote and with all the best qualified administrators and school board members Jackson County should have the best school system in the state. Oh lord those terrible Hispanic illegials have invaded Nicholson. There were efforts to comsolidate the three school systems. Maybe it should have happened. Then everyone could be kissing cousins. there has been many fights at EJCHS but none make the news...and the one time they do they decide to emphasize that they are all hispanic?

I think that bullying needs to be addressed in the JC school system. We, as JC residents, should support the school system and our children's education. Being negative and pointing fingers isn't fixing anything. When things like this happen we should come together as a whole and rise above. Bullying and the fact that it is pushed under the rug, however, is a very big and real issue within the school system. KBMS is notorius for this!!!!!
