Rep. Tommy Benton introduced legislation last week that would make future elections of the chief magistrate judge and the probate judge nonpartisan.
The legislation came at the request of the Jackson County Board of Commissioners. Unlike most local legislation that is passed as a matter of courtesy, this bill will go on the House calendar “just like any other bill,” Benton said Tuesday.
“We’ve done a lot of this for other areas, so I don’t expect a problem,” Benton added.
Also last week, Benton dropped local legislation — also requested by the board of commissioners – that would combine the Board of Voter Registration and the Board of Elections for Jackson County.
