Jackson County and Jefferson governments are joining together to seek a $1 million grant to go toward the historic courthouse renovation project.
The money would be use for sidewalks around the courthouse and interior work.
The board of commissioners voted Monday night to seek the grant. Jefferson city manager John Ward and county planning director Gina Mitsdarffer spoke on the grant.
It is a 20 percent match grant with the county’s portion to be $176,000. This could include “in-kind” work provided by county staff.
The historic courthouse will be used as a “welcome center and transportation museum,” according to county officials.
Do you all harbor the same bitter vitriol for the upkeep and maintenance of the Lincoln Memorial, Washington Monument, et al? Nobody is talking about raising taxes to pay for this.
That seems like a no-brainer to me. Do it!
Why do it? Because it’s a pretty much accepted fact that renovating historic area resources like courthouses does absolutely help in revitalizing Georgia’s towns. Historic buildings have irreplaceable value. Historic buildings generate economic and social benefits. A renovated courthouse will do more to reinvigorate our County Seat and the County itself than will, say, spreading more asphalt.
I agree with JacksonCountyCitizen—a welcome center and transportation museum sound like the answer to a question no one is asking. Let’s protect that courthouse! Let’s preserve it! And most of all, let’s use it! Put a good galley in it. Let’s party in it. Let’s have concerts in it, anything but a welcome center and a museum with blurry black and white photographs on the walls of narrow-gage logging engines. Ach!
I can see the Courthouse Marquee now – it says “PARTY PARTY PARTY.” Jack
Did we get any say so in this rebuild NO !
