The teacher and administrator should have moved a little faster.

Sounds like the typical JHS I attended. Bullying is surrounding that facility.

Brad- Bullying hasn't just started surrounding JHS? This same thing was happening when I went there 25 years ago so this is nothing new.

In my day, not in Jefferson, the student who pushed the teacher would be permanently expelled. The two fighters would have gotten detention. (together)

Well Michael- In my day both students would be suspended for 5 days and the student who pushed the teacher would be suspended for 10 days.

I have to say that in this matter, I am very proud of the Barrow County school where I teach. We recently had a similar incident at our school, but the story was published as more than one sentence and there were arrests made. Discipline is very slack in schools today, but I am proud that our school and law enforcement are attempting to create a safer environment for our students and staff.

BC Teacher JC Citizen- I agree but one of the problems is adults try to play it off as stupid childish actions and the kids are just seeking attention? Then the school suspends them and they get a few days out of school to lay around and do nothing. The parents usually do nothing because they don't care or don't have time to punish their own kids

That was in you guys days, not in the present day. These days students are getting little to no punishment at all. Most of the bullying isn't even reported to administrators. When the student doesn't report an incident that involves bullying, then something needs to be changed. When the counselor welcomes you to JHS, stating "You might get bullied, but it isn't your fault nor the bullies fault, we just like to keep the community small", then it's past time for a change to occur. When students are contemplating death, or some even committing suicide, then it's past time for change. Change needs to occur now. Whether it's change in authority and administrators, or if it's change in the students. Jefferson is going to have to lay down the law and enforce the Zero Tolerance laws.

Brad- That's why parents today need to take parenting classes? Kids get no home training so when they get out in public they act this way. Part of the blame should be put on the students shoulders BUT part of the blame is the parents fault too?

Bring back the wooden paddle that was used in the past and the fights, bullying and most other things that go on in todays school will not happen as often. Detention and suspension does nothing. They wear it as a badge of honor. The only thing that gets through to a young persons mind is delivered to their rear end by a piece of oak.

Amen BR549- I agree but now they say paddling hurts a child's self image? They sure didn't care about our image they would beat the crap out of us and not give it a second thought. I think that's why kids today get in more trouble than we did and act the way they do?
