Two people have been arrested by the Jackson County Sheriff's Office in connection with an armed robbery Thursday at a rural country store.
Shaun Fortson, Elberton, and Keri Ann Mullins, Hull, were charged with armed robbery and kidnapping in the incident that took place at Stop-and-Shop store on the Jefferson-Commerce road in the Harrisburg community.
Officials said two people wearing masks, a white male and white female, entered the store with a handgun, tied up a store clerk with duct tape and took money from the cash register.
A Jackson County Sheriff's Office deputy happened to be in the area and saw a black Mitsubushi car traveling at a high rate of speed on the Brockton-Thyatira road, according to officials. After stopping the vehicle, the deputy arrested the two occupants and discovered some items connecting them to the robbery. As search warrant was being executed Thursday afternoon for other items in the car.
One of those charged reportedly confessed to the robbery, officials said.
FORTSON AND MULLINS

If drugs were not bad enough in Jackson County,
Job loss added to the situation and Increases in property taxes coupled with inflation and less wage have set forth a catalyst of events to come.
There has been 4-5 robberies in recent months at a minimum and that is just convenience store robberies.
Hoschton and Nicholson are without police departments. There will be a greater need of officers to combat the wave to come and to enforce control of Jackson County.
The Deputy did a great job in capturing the two suspects. Luckily, he was at the right place at the right time and was tact in performing his duties which led to the arrest of criminals. That makes you and I sleep better at night.
This was nothing more or less than a crime of stupid opportunity. I mean heck, how much money did they think they were going to get from a small c-store in the country? A hundred bucks....maybe! It dosen't take a Phi Beta Cappa from Auburn to figure that out.
Let me tell you something. If you are desperate enough and honest, you get creative. I remember when I was young, 23 or so, I spent two straight weekends in Atlanta at the truck stop shining fuel tanks on big trucks for cash at about 20 bucks each. All it took was a towel and some chrome polish. I needed Christmas money. It was damn hard work and my arms hurt so freaking bad I still remember it well but I made 500 bucks in two weekends. In 1982, that was a chunk of X-mas shopping money. Stealing from someone, or God forsake, tying up some innocent person and scaring the dickens out of them, is absolutely NOT AN OPTION!
I'd like to say this to anyone who even considers resorting to doing something like this. Please stop! Just stop! Think about it for a minute before acting. What if someone gets hurt or killed? The fifty or a hundred bucks you are going to obtain (if successful) is a smidget. It isn't going to fix your problem.
If the motivating reason for what you are about to do is an addiction to drugs, get help. Just get help man. The first place you might try is right where you are. Just close your eyes and ask God to help you. If you are serious about your request, you will be directed to the next step. If you really and truly want to overcome the problem, resources are available to help you.
If you think you have tried all the avenues, and are dead serious about changing your life as it applies to a drug habit, you're confused, or you think there is no one to help......remember IF you are serious, call Emmett Delaney. I'll find someone to help you.
Any police officer in Jefferson can give you my number. You can call Chief Joe Wirthman, at the Jefferson Police Department. He knows how to reach me. Almost any employee at Mike's, Jefferson Ford, many Sheriff's deputies and half the businesses in town know my cell number. I'd put it here but the editor would probably prefer that I don't.
I despise illegal drugs that get used for the wrong purpose. I detest drug dealers, manufacturers and distributors of useless so-called recreational drugs....especially meth. I do however, understand addiction very well. More importantly, I understand how to avoid it. If you contact me with a need for help, I will keep your information confidential and find you some help, so long as you haven't killed anyone, everything will be okay. There are people in this world who care enough about killing this horrible problem in our society, that they will get involved.
