Jackson County State Court Judge Jerry Gray died unexpectedly on Friday, according to one official.
Gray, 58, was hoping to leave Athens Regional Medical Center this weekend after an unspecified surgery when he passed away, according to county clerk of courts Camie Thomas.
The judge had a private practice before coming to the state court, according to Thomas.
Last month, Gray and state solicitor Don Moore asked the Jackson County Board of Commissioners to move its state court from a part-time to a full-time court. At the time, Gray said that due to the number of cases, he had been serving as a full-time judge, although the court was only structured to be part-time. The BOC later opted to keep the state court as a part-time operation.
Little-Ward Funeral Home, Commerce, is in charge of arrangements.

My son & I attended Daren's Eagle ceremony not long after he had crossed over from Cubs to Boy Scout Troop 326. We were so impressed by Daren & his family. The troop was saddened to hear of Judge Gray's death & send our heartfelt condolences.
