Students will start back to school Friday, Aug. 1, in the Jefferson City School System for the 2008-2009 school year. An estimated 2,624 students are expected to be on hand.
In the Jackson County School System, which starts back Aug. 7, some 530 additional students are expected to add growth to the system.
The county school system will also open one new school this year. The new Gum Springs Elementary School will hold its ribbon cutting ceremony on Sunday, Aug. 3, at 3 p.m. Open house will be held on Tuesday, Aug. 5, from 4-7 p.m.

JEFFERSON CITY SCHOOL SYSTEM EVENTS
• Pre-planning for teachers in the Jefferson City School System will be held through Thursday, July 31.
•Jefferson High School will hold its registration on Thursday, July 31, from 10:30 a.m. to noon for 10th grade students; and from 1-3 p.m. for ninth grade students. JHS has scheduled two open house events for the 2008-2009 school year. The first open house will be held on Monday, Aug. 25, from 6-8 p.m. The second open house will be held on Jan. 26, 2009, from 6-8 p.m.
•Jefferson Middle School will hold its registration and open house on Thursday, July 31, from 3:30-6:30 p.m.
•Jefferson Academy will hold its open house on Thursday, July 31, from noon to 4 p.m. Students new to the Jefferson City School System may register at the school between 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. on any business day prior to the first day of school. However, parents are asked to register their students this week.
•Jefferson Elementary School will hold its open house on Thursday, July 31, from 8 a.m. to noon for pre-K to second grade students. New students registering at the school are asked to bring their birth certificate, immunization record, Social Security card and proof of reside
