The Jackson County Board of Education reversed its earlier “No” vote to hire three retired teachers part-time when it voted to hire one of them as a part-time employee and girls’ basketball coach.
The action, led by BOE member Michael Cronic who changed his vote, took place Tuesday night at a called meeting of the board just before graduation ceremonies at Jackson County Comprehensive High School.
In a 3-2 vote, the board agreed to hire John Hawley as the varsity girls’ coach and a JCCHS PE/health teacher on a part-time basis. Hawley is retired from the Gwinnett County School System and is the husband of Rise Hawley, the assistant superintendent for teaching and learning for the JCSS.
Board members Jill McEver Elliott, Lynne Massey-Wheeler and Cronic voted to approve Hawley’s employment, while board chairperson Kathy Wilbanks and member Tim Brooks voted in opposition. Hawley was hired for two years.
Hawley’s employment, along with that of two other teachers who wanted to work part-time, had earlier been rejected by the BOE in a 3-2 vote. But Tuesday, Cronic, who earlier voted against hiring Hawley and the other teachers, said he had changed his mind after being contacted by some parents. He said some of the parents of the girls’ basketball team had threatened to take their players to Jefferson High School if the JCCHS program didn’t become more stable.
“It may not be in the interest for our system; but right now, it’s probably in the best interest for our girls,” he said.

Actually, get over yourself! Relative…sister…nobody cares about that! You must have your blinders on and missed what everyone is upset about! HIGHLY QUALIFIED teachers lost their jobs. If you were in their shoes then you would understand. Your point of view is skewed because your interests are solely for your VERY TALENTED SISTER. The promising future in sports that you want for your sister will start with academics. The sport never comes before the books in college.
I truly hope that Mr. Hawley can live up to his high expectations. He must be an amazing coach to be asked to come out of retirement. I’m impressed that he thinks he can turn the team around in two years. I might have to hold him on the same pedestal as I do Michael Jordan. Maybe Jordan will come out of retirement AGAIN! I guess you’re never too old.
Looks like you traded a reelection, credibility and your backbone for 2 years of a guy who will spend more time running the Suwanee Sports Academy than your JCCHS basketball program.
Hawley is a hell of a coach but you gotta learn to call a bluff.
If I threaten to transfer my family to Madison County because I don't like your change of vote will you change it back?
Congratulations on opening a can of worms you will never see the bottom of.
Building a "stable" basketball program isn't done by succumbing to the threats of parents. It's done by allowing the athletic departments to do their job FREE of those parental threats.
welcoming move especially for the freshmen and sophomores since Jefferson is not announcing
a coaching change in two years.
Decisions are based on the best intrest of
our children. The decision the BOE made was
not in the best interest of the girls but in the interest of select parents.
“It may not be in the interest for our system..."
You have got to be KIDDING ME! Mr. Cronic, why are you on the BOE? You should submit a letter of resignation immediately. In these economic times, we need people who will do their jobs.
THANK GOD MY CHILDREN HAVE GRADUATED AND NOT FURTHER VICTIMS OF YOUR CLEARLY 'PREFERENCIAL' EDUCATIONAL SYSTEM.
TOUGH QUESTIONS" to our administratiors and BOE. Yep tough ecomomic times pays over $40,000 for part time!! Allowing parents to make the call for these positions could eliminate the need for the athletic director and the administration. Those salaries could definitely cut into the deficit.
That's it I just cut and saved the budget? When my kids played "T" ball a few parents coached their teams for FREE. I coached for 2-3 years and didn't make a dime off it. We did this for the kids not the money. And these coaches say they do it because they love the sport BUT if the money ain't there neither are they.
I too was faced with a very difficult decision recently, and after much deliberation changed my mind. Thank you for setting an example that every public figure should be able to follow.
Your dedication to keeping your thumb on the pulse of public opinion is refreshing.
It is while thinking of your ability to change your mind that I will take great solace when the American public makes fun of me for changing my mind.
My decision may not be in the best interest of my family but it's in the best interest of my boys at this time.
Love,
Brett Favre
IT'S ALL ABOUT BEING No.1 to them and don't let none of them LIE TO YOU.
who voted for the stint of a "two year coach. "Webster's Dictionary defines ...
STABILITY - The strength to stand or endure.
Our children are stronger than you give them
credit - they are resilient. Your "in the best interest of the girls" quote is non-sense. You had qualified "in house" applicants willing to take the program more than a two-year stand. Is this decision fair to the underclass girls who will be juniors and seniors in two years. The math equation answer here is "NO", given the fact
that in two years we begin this process all
over again. Also, hats off to Wilbanks and Brooks for having a backbone on their vote not to change their decision on parental pressures and to Cronic...your backbone went to rubber.
Take a lesson from your own quote...you need
more stability or strength to endure parental
pressures! You have more constituents when it comes time for re-election other than the parents of a team!
I say the man is lying, all those who voted no would have got the same pressure. He was probalby promised a job with the school system. Thats how it works folks. Until you replace the entire administration, Jackson County schools will over spend and under acheive.
take his place - they created "a new part-time job" for Hawley when they just disposed of how many positions within the county...Was no one
else good enough for Dr. McGhee?

BOY IT MUST BE NICE TO BE RELATED TO SOMEONE IN POWER.
IT'S NOT WHO IS MORE QUALIFIED for the job IT'S WHO YOU KNOW. And how much pull they have within the school system.
If JCCHS is going to have a basketball coach, and they are, why not hire a good one? Sounds like they did just that, and I applaud them. Maybe the high expectations the coach supposedly has will rub off on some other people around here.
@Resident Redneck -- Why didn't you sign up to run for school board or county commission if you are so unhappy with the way things are?
the administrations decision to hire a non-certified individual and approve of the decision of the board to create a half-time PE position. If you were in the position of one
of these educators losing their job, how would you be feeling? Might come home to bite you soon!
To answer your question about why I didn't sign up to run for the school board or county commission? I have worked around crap all my life and I choose not to do it any more and 1 person with sense can't change all these idiots? And if a parent like you called me and said you were going to take your kids and put them in Jefferson because the basket ball program was better I would tell you maybe your kid is the reason ours ain't no better than it is and then I would HANG UP ON YOU.
And thank you BOE - especially Cronic - for halping Jackson County remain a laughing stock. No one is going to take any of your programs seriously until you do.
And I have to agree with you about Jackson County remaining a laughing stock?
Years past the Jackson County Football team has been a laughing stock I guess now the basketball team has took over that title. What's next the baseball team or the tennis team No I got it the golf team? Maybe they could try to get Bobby Cox to coach the baseball team or MAYBE they could try to get Tiger Woods to coach the golf team?
'
Jackson County can hire the best basketball coach in the world and pay him a million dollars a year but if the players still suck they ain't going to win. A coach don't make a winning team GOOD PLAYERS DO.
Yes I know about the politics in high school sports. The whole sports program isn't based on the kids for the kids? It is based on the kids for the parents. It's that way all all the local high schools. The parents are trying to relive their glory days through their kids?
I just had a new thought "What IF the team looses more games with this "NEW GREAT COACH" is he going to say it is his fault and quit or is the BOE gonna fire him? No because of who he is tickling at night.
I agree that a coach does build a program, but there will be no program building at JCCHS b/c Mr. Hawley will only be there for a year or two.
The parents know now if they call Cronic and complain he will kiss butt to keep their kids there? Someone needs to buy him some CHAP STICK? Because his lips are going to get mighty chapped.
another "highly qualified and certified teacher" will lose
their job to accommodate a 1/2 PE teacher/coach in order to offset the effort to balance the budget. HiQ teachers hold on to your seats.
-The girl’s basketball team has had the talent to be a dominating team for years. They just needed to be turned loose on the competition. Also the girls are practicing 4 days a week this summer. Where has the work ethics been over the years? A coach is paid the same money if he prepares his team during the off season or not.
The Lady Panthers Basketball team played in the 2010 Spring High School Basketball Suwanee league.
Listed below is the lady Panthers record for the last 6 games. Well you be judge of who has talent.
Stephens County 21 Jackson County 65
East Hall 33 Jackson County 40
Dawson County 41 Jackson County 50
Jefferson Dragons 26 Jackson County 39
West Hall 14 Jackson County 56
Chestatee 36 Jackson County 45
-This is not a Mr. Cronic vote. It took a majority vote by the school board and approval by the school administration to hire Mr. Hawley. Could all these people be wrong? I think not!
-Most parents do not get involved but criticize the end results as long as it does not require any effort.
These so call basketball parents got involved in the political system to improve the quality of our school system. Is it a strange observation to think that the elective board would listen to people that put them in office.
- I hope to see you at the first girl’s basketball home game.
The girls practicing 4 days a week.....isn't that what they are suppose to be doing. Doesn't sound like anything out of the ordinary to me.
Cronic's vote was all about politics. Give me a break!
I also thought that it took a majority vote by the School board and not just Mr. Cronic vote to hire the new coach.
It's pretty bad when they have to call a meeting b/c Cronic cracked due to pressure by the lovely administrators at the high school. Sounds like the administrators really cared about your girls' program from their threats.
By the way, most kids during the Spring play on travel teams and AAU for exposure instead of playing at Suwanee. Why aren't Jackson County girls doing this?
It is also pretty good to have a majority of the School board to side with Mr. Cronic. It shows that your view point is in the minority!
There are several players at Jackson County that could pick the AAU team they could play on. But, winning an losing should be done as a team so this group of girls chooses to play together. What a thought a player putting there team mates over exposure.
I do believe that in the beginning, you and your bball supporters were in the minority b/c Cronic voted NO b/c he knew what was being done was wrong. After administrators put the pressure on him, he felt he needed to change. He still knows it is wrong. Too bad he doesn't have a backbone and stands up for what he truly believes in instead of letting McGhee get his way.
If you had players that could supposedly pick their AAU team then they should be doing so instead of playing in a sub-par league (obviously according to the score reports mentioned).
It also shows what you know about the administrators. They have no ability to put pressure on the Board members. Try to remember the Board is elected by the voters!
Obviously you have no working knowledge of the School Board also. Or you would know that the Administrators answer to the School Board.
The issue is you do not like the final majority vote by the School board. And, just because you disagree with his vote he must not have a backbone. I think Mr. Cronic demonstrated he has true grit by his vote. I also hope he keeps making these types of good decisions in his next term as a Jackson County School Board member!!!!
Please inform me how many scholarships have been offered in the past ten years? I must be out of the loop hole. I'm pretty sure I've NEVER seen a college offer an entire high school basketball team a scholarship. There is no "I" in team but their is an "I" in ignorant. I recommend you stay in your little circle where there is no college exposure. I will be watching you in the future play at Gainesville State College. You know...they are undefeated!
These teams that you are playing that went to the state playoffs last year...well, their talented players are playing for the Atlanta Metro...the Atlanta Magic...Atlanta Dream Team Celtics...or the Georgia Pistols...and they travel from state to state getting exposure. Next year, (in your coach's last year), maybe he can get you a try-out to one of these teams. Ohhh, that would be a conflict of interest with Suwanee Sports, right?? and that would be a conflict with your motto...winning and losing together as a "team!!!" Good Luck!
I will try to type slowly so you can understand it. Is YOU GO BOY the most intelligent thought you could think of!!!!!!!!!!!
-Hello Ball Gazer. I hope you don’t mind the nick name but it is so fitting. And if you do mind well it is like the School Board decision, live with it.
-I hope you have a nice day.
-Your statement about Gainesville State College only confirms that your basketball IQ is equal to Gainesville State College winning record for 2010. It also informs me that the big “I” in ignorant is something you probably hear a lot.
-You have never been to any of the games the girls have played this season at Suwanee. You have no knowledge if the other teams were missing players. Sounds like you are hearing the big “I” again.
-There have been several AAU teams that have been trying to recruit 2 of the Jackson County girls to play for them for the past two years. But it being a small circle why are they recruiting for player there.
Sounds like you are hearing the big “I“ again.
-I think that you are really just frustrated about the School Board vote and you know that there is nothing you can do about it. I also think you are frustrated about Mr. Cronic and you know that he will be reelected for another term. Also there is nothing you can do about that. The new coach will decide how long he will coach the team and again there is nothing you can do about that either. GOOD LUCK WITH THAT!!
Pointing out your rude comments does not make me hostile. It just means that if you make vain and hateful comments you are a popinjay. Please feel free to continue bloviating. (LoL)
salary per year quoted earlier on the blog,
is this a provisional salary? They should not
be able to pay a certified salary if he is
not certified. Taypapers, we need to be advised of our monies and where they are being
allocated. By the sound of the $40,000 for a
half time position, this also sounds like a
certified salary? Sounds excessive for 2 classes per day!
Sports are a very important contributing factor in a child's education process. Only those who did not / do not participate in them usually have critical things to say in that regard. There are statisitcs out the ying yang that display clearly that kids who are active in school sports programs learn valuable life skills that serve them later. Learning to deal with pressure, competition and team work are good life skills, wouldn't you think?
Think for a minute about a young girl, say 15 or 16 years old who has stood on a foul line a few hundred times in front of hundreds of people, with seconds left in a close game, making a foul shot. Or....perhaps, missing one! Don't tell me that the experience of this will not serve this kid later in ways that can not be duplicated.
It is a shame that the money issue seems to be what is driving the train here. Were it not for that, I would think even some of the folks who have given dissenting opinions about the hire would not be so outspoken.
I would hope that one thing would prevail in everyone with children in school. They will live this once! Only once! Be it that choose basketball, arts, drama or whatever, I would hope parents would put down their blinders and realize that whatever cost is necessary, a coach, equipment, uniforms, materials, etc,.. would somehow be provided, at whatever cost, so the children can get the most of the years they will spend as such, learning everything can, enjoying their lives and the things we have to offer them to ensure their success.
Remember, there is no "DO OVER" button on a kids life. Say for instance, like there is on a video game! Oh sure, a video game is cheaper and does not require a 40,000 a year coach but look around people.
We need to understand that a child needs to be first! If they need basketball, we get it, we get the ball, we build the gym, we hire a coach, if they need a track, we recover it or whatever, if they need art supplies, we get them! It's that simple. The biggest thing is that everyone needsw to develop the elasticity of thinking in this matter to understand that all of the activities are as important as the others.
neighboring county, I was directed to this blog
for entertainment.
Neeless to say, this type of backlash between
parents, players, county officials and others
can certainly be a detriment for any higher
education institution looking for an athlete
for their sports program. These types of verbal confrontations hurt your county name and
your ball programs image. Like a virus, this
will spread and attach itself to the people who
could make the decision for a young athletes
future. I think that backbiting from parents and players would not be on the qualifications
list that a college coach is seeking.
their progressing with their games?
