Two children killed in murder-suicide

Tuesday, May 4. 2010

A Jackson County man killed two young children before shooting himself Monday afternoon.

Murder-suicide has been ruled in the death of Keith Jerome Gresham, 36, and two children, ages 4 and 7. Gresham apparently shot himself after killing the two children. Gresham was found inside a vehicle in a secluded area off of Old Woods Bridge Road, a dirt road between Maysville and Jefferson.

Family members became concerned Monday after receiving text messages from Gresham.

Investigator David Cochran with the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office said family members went to Old Woods Bridge Road because it’s an area where Gresham went.

“He frequented this area a lot,” Cochran said.

Gresham was found inside a vehicle on the road and the two children were outside the car.

Law enforcement officers believe the shooting was the result of a domestic dispute between Gresham and the mother of the children. Both children had Gresham’s last name but only the youngest was his biological child.

“Apparently Keith Gresham and the children’s mother were in an ongoing domestic dispute,” Cochran said. “She had filed a temporary protective order against him with courts. He had been angry over this. That is what we think is the motive of this.”

My heart goes out to this family. What a horrible thing to do to two innocent children. I cannot imagine the pain this mother must be feeling. I pray you have lots of family, church and freinds to guide you through these difficult days.

That is so true, I can't believe that anyone would defend him. I to knew him I went to school with him and my sister talked to him for a couple of yrs. he did not seem like that kind of person, but I guess we didn't know him as well as we thought and no matter what him and the mother was going through the kids did not have ant thing to do with it, he should have just killed his self and left those boys alone I feel sorry for them being inocent and he made a stupid call and he will not be forgiving for taking the lives of two children.

Don't judge a person until you have walked in their shoes. You didn't know what a GREAT person Keith was and he LOVED his children. It's ok that you don't understand and nobody ever will but get one thing straight this man was FAR from crazy. I have known him all my life and I am just as shocked as everyone else. That is right Christina, nobody should judge. My daughter and I knew Keith for a long time also. He was a really good person. People don't know what all was going on and they need to stop judging. God will take care of things.

Am I really reading that you feel that he was a GREAT person and that he LOVED his children? This is ridiculious!! He may have not been CRAZY then he was PURE EVIL! This coward is a murderer! I am the first to say that yes I am judging him and I don't care. What he did was cold and heartless!! If I have to answer to GOD for judging someone who took 2 innocent lives then that's on me and I can live with myself for that. I agree with you. Keith was a good father and a good person. We had no idea the circumstances and what he was going through. I will always remember him as a person with a ready smile and a kind heart.

How very very sad our hearts are broken over the murder of these 2 young children. No one on this earth will know why the adult male was so compelled to take away God's gift to so many others. It is all in God's hands now.

To the family: you will never make sense of this but thank God for the few years you were blessed to have these children in your loving arms.

Why in the world would the father even have visitation with the boys if there were protective orders against him from the mother? And my ex wonders why I don't want to let him have unsupervised visitation with our boys! As a mother I only want to protect them even if it be from their own father. I can see things getten bad enought to kill yourself but the two little babys you have more respect for a dog you just take them on a dirt road and let them go you don't kill them why kill the poor babys they didn't understand what was going on. Online Athens reports that the killer was scheduled to be in Jackson Superior Court Monday afternoon for violating probation. He had also been arrested in Oglethorpe County for a felony crime while he was on probation in Jackson County. Why wasn't he in jail in Jackson County for violating probation???

The early years of my life were shaped by the close net communities of Jackson County. No longer a resident but truly a concerned citizen...I totally understand the grief experienced by all! The exact answers as to why this happened will never be revealed. All who express the character of "Keith Gresham" understood him as a well mannered person. Keith overcame serval obsticles in his life. He held strong family ties and was not known for violence! This situation is very difficult to understand...mostly because people who actually knew Keith, clearly knew that he loved his children! Judging his character is irrevelant to how he and his children died! That was Not the Keith we all grew to Love! People face it our Nation is in a Mental Health Crisis! We do not know how much is to Much for a person to bear! My advice is to get your own Life in Order because you do not know how you would react in troubled Times!! You are so correct! The Keith that I knew and loved was not the same Keith that woke up Monday morning, there is no way he would have ever hurt his boys much less himself! People need to wake up because it could have been your son, your brother, your uncle, etc. the list goes on, you can never tell what is going through someones mind and you sit here in Judgment about a person you never knew! It is very hard when this happens to someone you know, you don't want to judge, but when you see this on the news about people you don't know, it's easy to say that person was a monster. I have known Keith Gresham for sometime now, and have always known him to love his kids extremely! This WAS NOT the Keith that everyone knew and cared for. I know he was dealing with a lot and only wish that he had thought of another way to handle things. My heart goes out to his family as well as the mother of those boys. I won't put her name up, but that is who I feel the most pain for. Those were her only 2 kids, and they were taken from her. Everyone in this horrible event is in my prayers.

I don't care how "nice" and "what a good father" he seemed obviously he wasn't because he killed them. Hello!?! You'll never convince me that this man loved his children. He was a criminal as noted by being on probation in 2 counties?? He obviously was not a man of the community. He didnt have a job and provide for his family in a respectful way. He wasnt a good person. He dealt drugs and committed crimes all over the place. Who keeps freinds for 20 years that does that? Also, the mother of these children will pay for this for the rest of her life. She did no better than he did. I just want to say this is a complete tragedy. I knew the 7 year old from school, he was a friend of my son's and he was precious. I did not know Mr. Gresham, nor do I wish to judge him. I don't think anyone can possibly understand what makes anyone snap and do such. My main question is with the mother having a protective order against him, why did she allow her precious babies to be unsupervised with him? In my opinion she is just as resposible for their deaths as he was. For his family and hers my heart goes out to you all and may God bring you peace in the days ahead.

I too knew Keith. He worshiped those kids. That is why it is so hard to grasp him doing this. He had to be in a totally different state of mind to do this because those kids were his life. One wasnt even his biologically but yet he raised him as well as another boy. My son played football with the older one last fall and this has just shocked our family. I pray for the Gresham family everyday because I'm not sure how much more the whole family can take. The last year has been terrible. Everyone affected and the boys Mom especially are in my prayers with the upcoming holiday.

Why is everyone feeling sorry for this mother, she put her kids in this situation. He had been texting her all morning that he was suicidal and yet she did nothing! If I had such an issue with my children's father that I needed a protective order against him, you better believe my children wouldn't be alone with him not for a second let alone an entire weekend. She is just as guilty as he is in this act, she may not have pulled the trigger, but she put those angels in that situation. For his family as well as hers, but not for her, I pray. People like her don't deserve sweet angels and it sounds to me with a mother like that those babies are so much better off in heaven. I am very well aware that no one is safe from tragedy, but I also know that someone that I claimed I needed a protective order from wouldn't be alone with my children. I agree with you as does everyone that I have spoke with about this, that "mother" is and should be held resposible. Nothing angers me more than women who use the system when its convienent for them. I work as a social worker and can tell you that people such as her keep others from getting the help they need. Sharon, you are correct that we are not to judge someone. You are correct that it is God's job, but the emotions involved with kids being killed run wild to most people. I am not 100% clear on your final statement. "Some of you better watch what you say, no one is tragedy free, it's everywhere". I get the part that no one is tragedy free. Bad things happen everyday, but killing your own kids seems to be reserved for the sick minded cowards of the world. I think for the most part people should be furious with this cold blooded killer. I don't think that because I say something negative about him it would lead me to do the same thing. Most parents understand the job at hand when they have kids. They sacrifice for them not kill them. I will admit that I am not the most religious person, and I won't try to match words with some one that is. Everyone has their own opinion of things and I see there is some that don't like it cause some people care about Keith. What if one day the people that say he was a coward turns out to be one also? I just don't understand. How could anyone call this man a great father that loved his kids. How could this be a friend. People have said their kids loved this man. Do you realize your kids were in contact with a killer? If he could kill his own kids what makes you think he would not kill yours. Some of you said he had a lot of problems and was not himself. (BooHoo) everyone has problems, but most choose not to kill their kids. If all of you were such good friends of this man why were you not helping him during this difficult time in his life? You can continue to try and make this terrible deed seem better in your mind, but I never will. I am a parent, a coach, and a son. Kids are a gift in life. Anyone that can hurt or kill a kid ( not just mine; any kid) is a coward. I am shocked this happen, but I am more suprised by all of the people defending this killer. I would like everyone that disagrees with me to do one thing. Focus on the kids. Not the Killer Dad and not the mom; The kids. They are the victims. If you can still have sympathy for this killer then you need help. Whatever KG was to you he is no more. He is a man that killed his kids because he couldn't handle life. I too knew Keith lived across the street from him catrina and the children for over a year. I can tell you I still do not believe that keith could have ever done this to his children. For those of you who do not know the seven year old was not his biological son but the child he gave his last name because he loved him so much. I am at a loss for words but I also think that Jackson County needs to make sure that this was a murder suicide and not staged to look that way. Anyone who knew Keith knows that you feel the same way.

I had known Keith for awhile. I lived across the street from him for about 3 years and later down the road also worked with him. So yes he had a job and was one of the hardest working men I knew. When I lived across the street from him he was never outside without those boys playing,laughing,and cutting up. He also had a smile on his face when he would talk about them. Yes he had been to prison for selling drugs but had he ever hurt anybody NO. People that buy drugs make that decision themselves. Keith was a GREAT father and a GREAT friend if he could help you in anyway he would. I am NOT taking up for him and his actions in anyway but so many have judged him that didn't even know him and I think that is unfair. Its sad that he will be remembered for this and not as the great person he was.

The T.P.O. is issued by a superior court judge based on the preponderance of the evidence. That means there is a 51% chance that it is necessary. Not beyond a reasonable doubt like in a criminal trial which is about 95%.

Sometimes the T.P.O. causes more harm than good, as it may have in this case. Fathers are discriminated against in all divorce cases. They almost never get custody and visitation is very limited. Put yourself in the typical father's place. It is incredibly stressful.

I certainly can't see why this man killed his children but perhaps our system needs more help in counseling, etc. Tragedies like this, if they can be avoided, are worth the effort.

God will take care of the judgement, it is not your place.This family has to find a way to pick up and move on and only God knows how they will.
