The Jefferson Mat Dragons went into this past weekend hoping to advance 14 wrestlers to this weekend’s state sectional tournament.
They did just that, taking their 10th consecutive region wrestling title in the process at Riverside Military Academy on Saturday.
Of the 14 wrestlers to compete, 10 Mat Dragons took top honors in their weight classes, along with one second, one third and two fourth place performances.
The top four wrestlers from each weight class qualify for the state sectionals, which will be held this weekend at Jefferson.
The Mat Dragons scored 278 points en route to the victory, bettering second place Banks County, who scored 163, third place North Oconee with 155, fourth place Riverside with 90 and fifth place East Jackson with 73.5.
Among those winning in their weight classes were Kyle Springer at 103 lbs., Cason Thurmond at 112 lbs., Kelly Isaac at 119 lbs., Cutler Finch at 135 lbs., Cain Finch at 140 lbs., Wayne Elliott at 145 lbs., Jake
Sherman at 152 lbs., Forrest Przybysz at 160 lbs., Lucas Redd at 189 lbs. and Zack Allen at 215 lbs.
Clay Richardson took second in the 125 lb. category. Jace McColskey took third in the 171 lb. category. Daniel Barber took fourth in the 130 lb. class. Sam Loggins placed fourth in the 285 lb. category.
