For the third time in four years, the Jefferson Mat Dragons have come home from the Sham Slam at Habersham Central High School with the tournament title.
Jefferson took top honors on Saturday with 273.5 points, besting Lafayette with 198, Northwest Whitfield with 193, White County with 127 and Alexander with 105.
Five Mat Dragons took top honors in the tournament in their weight classes, including Kyle Springer, Cain Finch, Forrest Przybysz, Lucas Redd and Zach Allen.
Springer was named Most Outstanding Wrestler in the lower weight divisions, while Lucas Redd was named Most Outstanding in the upper weight classes.
Cason Thurmond, Isaac Kelley, Cutler Finch and Daniel Barber brought home second place honors in their weight classes. Clay Richardson and Wayne Elliott took third in their classes, while Jace McColskey and Sammy Loggins placed fourth in their weight classes.
“The team did real good,” said coach Doug Thurmond. “We were real proud of them. It was a hard tournament. Lafayette is tough, Northwest Whitfield is tough, and Alexander is pretty tough being state runner-up in 4-A.”
Also during the event, Jefferson coach Jack Keen was presented with the second Sham Slam Lifetime Achievement award for his years of service.
