Citizens living in the town of Pendergrass pay the highest combined tax rate in Jackson County. Pendergrass property owners will pay 35.48 mills in combined property taxes this year.
The City of Commerce has the lowest total tax rate in the county at 29.00 mills.
The tax rate varies in the county due to differences in incorporated tax rates, multiple fire districts which set their own rates and the fact the county has three school systems.
The multitude of combinations of millage rates makes Jackson County’s tax system the most complex in the state.
For the complete story and tax breakdown, see the November 11 issue of The Jackson Herald.

Why can the other counties afford this but we can't?
As for the comment by "Your Decision", I think many of us ARE asking ourselves "Why did I do this" and I can only answer for my family. We moved here because we THOUGHT it would be a nice place to raise our family. We THOUGHT it was a nice, friendly, close knit community; but we thought wrong! Turns out that it is nothing that we THOUGHT (and yes, researched), that it would be!
