Jackson County students struggled with the math part of the 2008 CRCT tests, according to results released last week.
Both third and fifth grade students at Commerce Elementary, Benton Elementary and Maysville Elementary failed the math part at a rate higher than the state average and third graders at North Jackson and South Jackson also failed at a higher rate.
In the eighth grade, students at Commerce Middle, Kings Bridge Middle and East Jackson Middle all had a higher failure rate on the math part of the CRCT this year.
In the other key areas of the CRCT, Reading, Language Arts and Science, area students did better overall, with the exception of Benton Elementary School where students failed at a higher rate in reading and where fifth graders struggled with Language Arts.
The CRCT scores in certain subjects not only determine if students will be promoted to the next grade, but the results are also used to account if schools and districts are following federal mandates by meeting Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP).
