When qualifying ended Wednesday afternoon, races were set for the mayor’s seat in three Jackson County towns.
Mayor’s race set in Jefferson, Nicholson, Arcade
Jefferson Mayor Jim Joiner will face challenger Debbie Langley in the Nov. 3 election.
In Nicholson, incumbent mayor Ronnie Maxwell will face Jimmy Ford. In Arcade, mayor Doug Haynie will face Polly Davis, who now serves on the city council.
JEFFERSON
In the District 4 Jefferson council race, incumbent council member Bosie Griffith and challenger Brian Mitsdarffer qualified.
Kathy Dubose was the only candidate to qualify for the District 2 seat on the city council. Incumbent David Varnedoe is not seeking re-election.
As for the school board, incumbent chairman Ronnie Hopkins and District 4 representative Derrell Crowe were the only candidates to qualify.
In the District 2 school board seat, Janice Wilbanks was the only candidate to qualify. The incumbent is her husband, Damon Wilbanks, who is not seeking re-election.
NICHOLSON
In Nicholson, those who qualified for the four at-large council seats are the incumbents, Faye Seagraves, Howard Wilbanks, Paul Cartledge and Lamar Watkins, as well as Edmond Dempsey, Bobby Crawford and Chuck Wheeler.
ARCADE
Qualifying for the five at-large council seats were: incumbents Dean Bentley, Tom Hays, Cindy Bone and Ron Smith and political newcomer Ricky Walker. An election will not be necessary since only five candidates qualified.
TALMO
In Talmo, the incumbents were the only ones to qualify for the three positions up for re-electio. Larry Wood currently serves and mayor and Jill Miller and Michael “Trapper” Brissey currently hold the two at-large council positions.

I am glad the citizens of Jefferson are going to have a choice for Mayor. The current city administration has lost touch with the people and a change is needed. It is time for a fresh face and new thought, all the current mayor knows how to do is spend, spend and spend some more. I hope everyone in Jefferson is tired of our taxes going up to boost the Mayor’s ego. I have even heard he is running for election so he can get appointed to a prestigious board but we'll have to wait and see. I hope everyone will go out and vote for change.
